Hi All

Pondering over the idea of getting a new bike, but insurance costs are playing a big part in the decision.
Living in north london, without a garage and being 19 are producing ridiculous costs.
For example...

2005 Triumph Daytona 650 (£3400 value) > TPFT = £11,250

I read somewhere that the daytona 650 was insurance group 15, so I want a website where you select the make and model of the bike and it tells you what insurance group it is in. I figure it will be quicker doing this than continuously filling out insurance checker forms.

Does anyone know of something like this?

Cheers!

Different companies use different systems, even norwich union add extra weighting to their standard groups, so it's hard to get a definitive answer.
Best bet is to get some quotes with something like the bike insurer site (use fake details, they'll spam you anyway they can.)

This is an out of date list: https://www.vauntage.co.uk/bike_groups.htm

Sometimes... just sometimes it's cheaper to go fully comp than TPFT, this was the case with my car. Worth a try

11k for a daytona?!
shit man.. i live in probably the roughest estate in Kent, insurance on my riding pals tl1000r is only £700 FC at 19..
That is some heft damage... how about you buy the bike for me..store at my locale, you know..safer + cheaper Razz

I believe MCN has reviews/Insurance groups on their site.

Also, older bikes will be cheaper for insurance in most cases, even for TPO!
Personally, I'd expect a circa-2000 vintage CBR/ZX6 will offer pretty much as good a riding experience, but will cost less to buy and possibly insure.
I'd look to spend around £1500 on the bike personally, then go TPO and get a big lock!

if you use go compare, you fill your details in once, then you just change the bike details everytime you want a new quote...... you just log in and click new quote, all your details are there and you just put the make, model, cover and value in...it's a doddle Very Happy

have already done the gocompare thing.
but the results are not coming up with anything below the cost of the bikes I'm entering Sad

I want to check the groups just to see out of interest to see if a lower group does change the insurance price.

I am starting to lean towards giving up and getting an old cbr or similar but I am drawn to the daytona as the cbr's etc are just a bit too common for me Sad
Meaning no offence to those that ride them, they are nice bikes but I like something a bit different to everyone else, like my Hyosung GT250 you don't see one of them every day or month Smile

MCN reviews put the insurance group on the bikes' pages.
However the grouping really doesn't mean a lot.
It was cheaper to insure my TT600 (group 14) than it was to insure a group 9 bike of the same value. Both were classified on insurance websites as Sports-Tourer.

From then on, I and the bicycle feelings deeper.

just tried using my friends address who lives in high wycombe...

2005 daytona 650 ridden by me locked in a garage...

£560

Same details without the garage...

£708

Really bloody annoying!!!
So, I live in an area of apparently high crime, so insurance rates are higher, thats fine.
But as a result but how the hell can they exceed the value of the bike!!!!

If you use Confused.com it's a piece of pee to just amend the quote and stick another make of bike in, especially if you trawl the adverts with piccies and get the reg numbers Wink

I do it quite a lot - I was thinking of a 748 but I was suddenly put off when I ran the quote through Shocked

I used to want this, then I realised the popular bikes were popular because they generally offered good 'value'. Bikes that are 'different' from the norm tend to be less-bought because they don't offer as good 'value'.
If I want to be seen as different, I'll spend the cash on some fancy shirts etc to wear out in town and get the most enjoyable bike to ride for the money, regardless of aesthetics.

Probably more likely to have an accident in London too - crash into a Ferrari and it's a lot more than the cost of your bike being paid out!

There's also the readily available Haynes manuals for the more popular bikes. The closest I have to a Haynes is a sub-section in the GN125 manual with what is essentially an overview of the GZ. The FZR250 doesn't even have an English factory manual, so I have to make do with the Japanese 250 diagrams and the English 400 manual. This is a moot point if you have the cash to pay a professional to do EVERYTHING for you. (probably not the case for the OP, as it's about insurance costs)
How off topic is the thread now?

I just did a TPO with all the same details...

Wycombe address...

£392

North London address...

£384

So I guess the third party aspect makes bugger all difference in terms of the chances of me hitting a ferrari in london rather than a punto in Wycombe

ohh hum.... Sad

Just get a cheap zx6 and use some of the spare cash to get a fancy paint work, or maybe some pink-spray cans, which'll make you a lot more distinctive than having a slightly different make of sports 600 Smile.

You're bright.

Ever thought, it's maybe not about the value of the bike you're trying to get; but more about what that bike could damage with you operating it?

If you hit a kid using a moped costing 90quid insurance, chances are you'd injure them.

If you hit a kid on a CBR6 costing 1500quid on insurance, chances are you'll kill them and damage more of the surroundings.

Capeesh?

EDIT - BTW, This site: https://www.vauntage.co.uk/bike_groups.htm#HONDA probably isn't quite true anymore. MY NS costs 211 a year to insure, the CB350 I quoted for last week came back as 91quid. That site says its in a higher insurance group, and my bike is like an 11iirc - not 4.

Can be any one of a list of around 7 at that price - Bennetts, E-bike, M-direct etc all come in within a tenner of that.

I just use confused.com or go-compare, and take the best deal out of that.

Try and give these guys a go, came up cheap on most insruance qoutes for me. On the comparison websites look in to going fully comp as it can often work out cheaper (and better) than TPFT, all my policies have been FC due to this.

https://www.simplyinsurance.uk.com/

Also the problem you are finding is because youre looking at the 650. I had a look in to this bike and found the 600 was noticeably cheaper to insure, possibly to do with capacity, possibly age but most likely both.

I'd also do what G said and consider getting a J1 ZX6R. Very good bikes, more than fast enough, good handling, relatively comfy, build quality is good enough for all year round and the insurance is cheaper than any 600 of a similar vintage.
