Nearly had a spill today, when a white Renault Master van just came out of a driveway, out of no where, didn't hesitate to look, just came straight out in front of me, i was doing 30mph, and i had to swerve left, and up onto the path, i had no time to brake, would of gone straight into the back of him Thumbs Down

He was lucky there was nobody coming on the other side of the road, because they wouldn't have stood a chance to dodge him Rolling Eyes

I just gave the prick the finger Middle Finger and shook my head...

That's the third incident i've had with a white van, and the closest encounter with kissing tarmac, i can feel my first spill coming soon... Thumbs Down but i'm not letting twats like that dampen my confidence Thumbs Up

Anyone else been involved in a sticky situation with a white van man?

Yeah, since moving from the countryside to the city, i've realised how many idiots there are out there, whether it be in a van, car or bike.

Had one pull out on me once, ended up about the centre of my lane before he realised. I had to swerve into the oncoming traffic lane (no traffic, luckily!) to avoid him.

Some people are a tad unattentive on the road to bikes it seems!

Sounds like someone maybe over-confident.

May i ask why you think i'm over-confident? If i was, i wouldn't have put i can feel my first spill coming soon it made me feel a little edgy and nervous, but i'm not the kind of person to let that put me down.

Yeah, i would of, most certainly, posted a thread if that happened Wink

The 'came out of nowhere' comment didn't help, for me. Exactly what you often hear 'cagers' saying about bikes.
Presumably there was either blind driveways, or some possibility to see over - either would mean taking some action based on that ideally (not suggesting I would have though).

I'm very thankful I live in a smaller town where all the locals seem above average drivers when it comes to being sensible because there are a lot of crazy hills around here.

However, I occasionally get seemingly always female drivers, especially at roundabouts, pulling out without seeing me. Or it could be me going "too fast" around a roundabout which is making them unable to judge my speed, but I'm not actually breaking any speed limits so really they are at fault.

White vans though, I always get annoyed when they overtake me as if I were a bicycle, staying well in my lane without bother to fully move over.

Well, the way i see it, he did come out of no where, he didn't let the front end roll out a little bit to look both ways for traffic, he just shot out, and from where i was in the road, he just appeared from behind the huge bush splitting the driveway up, and darted across the other side of the road and almost directly at me, which is why i can't belive i didn't come off. I was lucky that the curb was flat due to a driveway, otherwise that would have been a nasty spill.

Mmmmmm, you and flip both think i'm over confident... Maybe i am, but i just can't see it Embarassed i need to loosen up a bit for when i take my mod 1 and 2, because with over confidence, i'm bound to muck up somewhere Thumbs Down

Cheers G Wink

Twats in vans are the scourge of motorcyclists. If I had a quid for every time I've had a near miss or run in with one, I'd never have to work again Shocked

It doesn't sound 'over confident' for passing your test.
However, I bet there's some 'advanced riders' who would have noticed the concealed driveway exit before hand, then manoeuvred in the road so they could get a better view and better react if something does happen - as I say, I'd have probably been in the same position as you, but I'm sure there are many that would have coped with the situation much better.

The thing is, there were houses all along the roadside, driveway after driveway, and i'm not going to be keeping my eye out for each and every one of them, i need to be looking ahead of me for hazards. If i saw the van just poke out, and then he looked, i would have had time to slow down, but there wasn't any time, because he just appeared for a split second behind the bush, then a second later he was just about in front of me, which is when i did brake, but just didn't have the 2 second rule, so that's when i had to go up the path. Guess i need to get a grip and learn to react even in split seconds Rolling Eyes

Svenn mate, i watched that video before you posted me the link, i checked out your 30mph icy road spill, and from then onwards i watched loads more of yours, all the off roading ones and the trail riding with Alf Laughing

When i saw your video about the white van, it just reminded me of what had happened earlier, i left a comment on that video Wink

What a cock though, he just didn't have a clue, i thought you went into the side of him, he was oblivious to anything going on around him.

I like your videos though mate, i've subscribed Thumbs Up

Command your lane properly and ride in the centre of your lane, they can only over take you like that if you are giving them room.

Going faster is the best way of not being over taken.

And as Oz says if you don't ride to the very left of the road then no one can overtake you like that.

+1 Thumbs Up

However impatience can cause accidents. So if it is safe to give him room to overtake then do so.

I do ride in the middle of my lane, which is why they shouldn't decide to take up every bit of the roughly third of my lane to my right that I'm not in.

They give you inches sometimes, pretty much forcing you to move a bit to the left at least a little bit. Remember that I'm on a 125 as well, I get overtaken an awful lot on some roads so maybe I just experience this an above average amount of times.

I had one also a couple of weeks back, only I was driving the white van.
Somewhere on the outskirts of Nottingham, 06.30, dark and raining when I went to pull out at a T junction. A lad on a scooter with L plates on, I just caught some movement to my right as I started to go, the idiot just missed the front of my van, he didn't have his lights on???
He pulled up at some lights 200 yards down the road, gave me the finger and shouted something at us. what a knob.
he just carried on then, still without lights.
Wonder if he lasted the morning out.

But you have already proven to yourself that driveways can be a hazard. The fact that you couldn't see the driveway raises the hazard to a level higher than what is visible in front of you. In the perfect world you would move over to the right or reduce your speed to reduce the risk.

I do agree, i can't really say anymore, other than the fact i was doing 30mph in a 40mph zone, so i was going slow, just imagine if i was doing 40mph (because i usually keep to the exact speed limit, never exceed it) i would of gone into the van.

I just need to be more aware, looks like i might not do that well in the hazard perception test Laughing

I wouldn't worry about it. I failed an attempt at the perception test by trying to be too clever. The hazards are stupidly obvious.

Not had an incident with a white van, But had one of them spanners driving a horse box pull out and made me swerve around them. Then they had the cheek to point and wave mouthing the words "di**head".
