CBT Test...

The missus has just got her first moped and needs to take the cbt test before going on the road so anyone who has done the test and can give me info will be handy. Is it hard to pass , how much does it cost and if she fails would she have to pay to take the test again. Its the first time shes had a moped and not been on a moped before, l find this cbt a bit daft as you cannot go on the road untill you pass the test so how do you get the experience to be on the road in the first place. l'm not saying that you should be able to just buy a bike and go on the road, but surely there should be some kind of training centre to get use to bike riding before taking the cbt test. Afterall you pay for 1 day to ride and pass a cbt test even though you have not had a moped before

It is not a test. You cannot fail it. They can refuse to issue a certificate but suspect they would be on dubious grounds charging for training and they trying to charge more before issuing the certificate that comes with the training.

CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) is the very basic level wobbling round that you think should be done before CBT.

The missus has not been on a moped before so l just wanted to know how hard it was and if she did not pass on the day would she have to carry on paying till she did. If you have to pay again till you pass, then l find it a big rip off....

Last place i did my CBT they offered another days training for free if you weren't up to the mark. Its an assessment, thats the way i felt about it.
I'd just email or phone some nearby companies and ask for all the details.

Cost will vary..around £90-£120 and its designed to take someone who has never operated a ped/bike before and get them to do these basics.
1st part will be indoors going over basic road safety related to bikes.
After a few hours of easy learning (good instructors make it easy)
Its outside for the bike basics.

Check machine
Walk machine
Start machine....etc

I quite enjoyed my CBT as the instructor took me on some nice routes around Derbyshire in the afternoon.

It is aimed at people who have never ridden before.

As you can't fail it does appear dodgy that they can charge more for refusing to issue a certificate and making you do another day. However most appear not to charge again, although will often charge for the bike hire for any subsequent days.

Eye check - can you see a numberplate at the length of a cricket pitch
Checking of documents - make sure she has class A on the provisional part of her licence
Discussion on safety equipment
Basic bike handling - stopping going, steering, gear changes
Highway code
On the road with instructors

I passed, I had zero bike experience (and I don't count posing on a harley for a calendar as proper bike experience). Took me a day and a half, as the group I was initially with had more experience, so the instructor split the group and focussed on me and my needs (nice) whilst someone else looked after the experienced riders. We did riding in a straight line, round in figure of 8s, u turns, emergency stopping, changing gear, and then finally out on the road. Didn't do too badly on the road either, just need some more work on road positioning and going a bit faster.

I don't think it's too unreasonable to refuse to issue you with a competency certificate if the instructor thinks you're not up to scratch to be honest - once you've got that CBT it's just down to you on your lonesome on that motorised set of wheels, and the instructor needs to be satisfied that you're going to be safe with it.

CBT is a days training to prepare you for going out on the road on your own
you cannot fail as it is NOT a test
as a trainer i only refuse to issue a cert if you are going to be a danger to yourself or others
plenty bad trainers out there only interested in your money
shop around and spend your money with someone interested in you not your wallet
should be a fun day where your Mrs is buzzin at the end
