To be a biker in 2010....A whole new world

Hey all,

First post here (of many i hope) I'm completely new to biking so sorry if i seem a bit dumb with the lingo!

Thought it would be good to get on here and learn the lingo and make some mates etc

I've been driving for years, I drive a Mr Two (don't laugh!) But thought as a couple of mates are bikers I'd join in the fun. The main thing that pushed me over was having one of my best mates telling me about a 2 week holiday biking tour around the UK this coming summer. I wanted part of that, so I'm planning on doing a Direct access course for a full bikers licence within the next couple of weeks then looking to get a bike straight away.

I've been looking at a BMW 650cc GS, which I like the look of and i've been told is a good all rounder and would make a good first bike, as it's easy to ride. My only thought is the image - is it a bit.... girly?

I'm planning on heading to the bike show at Excel when it comes in a few weeks - is that a good time to get some clothing? or is it better to shop for online discounts?

Any thoughts, tips, etc are all welcome, but please be kind lol, this is a whole new world for me remember

the only thing i would recommend is changing the stock "faux-knobbly" tires, as they are shite in slippy conditions. (the one i rode stepped out on me mid courner and i nearly fouled myself)

Edit: they also easy to hit the limiter in the first few gears

Buying clothing at shows is a much better idea than buying online. It's important that what you buy fits you well, at a show you'll be able to try on lots of different stuff before you decide what to buy, if you buy online you don't get to try anything on.

I can only think of one person BCF who'll think buying that bike is a bad idea, and he's already posted in this thread.

Is it the old or new 650GS? Either way, they're over-weight, under-powered and over-priced to my mind.
Apart from that, fine bikes - plenty of people have taken them around the world and more.

They've been around the world, but there very heavy machines, depends if you want to take it off the road at times as the lighter offroader would benefit alot more as you'll be throttling an elephant in the sand unless you can ride into it at speed.

But i wouldn't call it girly, only real thing i would call girly is the 3-wheel or the old man 600cc scooter things.
