Hey there, i've heard from a few people that you don't have to wait any longer (or it's happening soon) to retake your CBT when it's expired. I was wondering if this is actually true and when is it coming into act?

Alrighty. Basically as far as I know right now, when your CBT expires you have to wait 1 or 2 years, i'm not sure which, before you can retake it. However i've heard that this is being scrapped and you can just retake it when it's expired.

Provisional bike license lasts for two years, and if you haven't passed your test in that time you have to serve a 12 month suspension.

Always thought this rule was a bit ludicrous...but as far as I know, the rule hasn't changed and isn't going to.

Ah, was beaten to it Wink

*scratches head* eh? I recently finished my two years of my CBT licence and retook my CBT a month later with no questions asked, (they knew I had recently finished my two years as well) never heard of this before.

Hmm. This may well be one to ask the training centre then.

Not heard of that myself, when I took my cbt the instructor told me if I didn't pass my test within two years I would have to retake cbt to carry on riding until I do pass. I also have mates who have been on cbt only since just after they were introduced as they only want bikes for commuting to work. Confused

Your provisional licence remains valid for the same length of time that your regular one does.

With a CBT certificate and provisional licence, you can ride a moped until the DVLA have your licence off you for extreme dodderyness. However, if you're using your motorcycle entitlement, you'll have to renew the CBT every two years.

There's no suspension or anything like that. The only way that'll happen is if the courts or the DVLA decide that, in your particular case, it's for the best!

When your CBT expires you don't have to wait before you can do it again.

But, it's daft retaking your CBT every two years as it costs less to do your tests than it does to do your CBT and you only have to do your tests once. Rolling Eyes

Fully agree with that mate, intend doing mine early next year and keeping the 125 for work but getting something like a bandit or fazer for week end fun and longer distance journeys Smile

Used to be the case before CBT came in. Hasn't been the case for well over 15 years now.

CBT lasts 2 years (used to be 3 I think). Now you can just retake your CBT to stay on the road as a learner.

All the best

I disagree. My CBT cost me £80.

When I go for my test I'll have to pay to do my theory test (and do all that pointless studying!), a lesson or two so I can be shown what will be looked for / how to pass this particular test and finally the test it's self. Will be at least a couple of hundred I reckon? All the up to 500 / 600 squid Shocked

And then it's back to riding how I always ever ride before I passed Laughing

Seeing as you're going to pay that at some point it seems logical to do your test rather than paying to do your CBT again.

If you've been on the roads for two years then you're not really going to need lessons, you can find out what will be looked for by looking at stuff on the 'net or getting the DSA motorcycle test book.

Pass your test and insurance will be cheaper than when you've just got a CBT. There isn't really a good reason for doing a second CBT instead of getting a full license.

Things have obviously changed then...for the better. The 12 month suspension was still in place not so long ago because I know someone who fell foul of it and never bothered with a bike again.

[edit] According to this: https://www.union.ic.ac.uk/rcc/motorcycle/nf_learning.htm the year off the road restriction on a provisional motorcycle licence held by non-full car licence holders is still in place.

A mate of mine is an instructor and was talking to him about cbt's and tests and he said the 12 month thing was no more, and was told when I did mine last march that if I didn't want to upgrade from 125's I could run on cbt and would have to go back in 2 years to re-take the cbt.

Used to be inforce to stop people perminantly riding on their CBT. This was changed about nine years ago, so I would suggest Imperial College update their website.
