AFAIK,
Dropping your bike is defined as anything below 5mph. Anything faster that that is a crash!

But crashing... apparently the biggest cause of crashes amongst bikes is innatentive car drivers at junctions. Smile

Dropping, well, putting your bike facing downhill with the engine running on a gravel drive isn't a good idea! Embarassed Although I don't know if that counts as a drop because I was nowhere near the bike at the time...

I always thought the most common cause was basic rider control. i.e. losing it on a bend.

Are you asking what is the most frequent cause of people dropping thier bike, or people crashing thier bike as they are two different things. Generally dropping a bike is from walking pace or below and crashing the bike is whilst riding it as opposed to pushing it around or trying to get on or off where it's tricky to.

All of the things you've mentioned in the poll are things to try to avoid but there are sometimes when you cannot or have no choice or whatever and just have to hope for the best and use you're best riding skill and knowledge to avoid ending up on the tarmac.

Just edit your first post to clarify if you are asking about dropping a bike or crashing a bike as they are two competly different things, and yes there are things which could cause both (bad surface, diesel and stuff like that) but most of them cannot apply to both.

The only times my bike has hit the ground was on one occasion taking a turn into a lane in the ice at approx 15mph, no damage, and donuting and general off road use. I've never damaged anything more than a brake lever though (Nothing more to break on an MT50).

I've never dropped or crashed my current bike (touches wood) but the times I've come close are when I'm staring at some semi clad female walking on the pavement and I nearly slam into the back of a car or something. Laughing.

Going down a country lane that became more and more muddy, turning into a track really. Deciding it was too muddy, attempting to turn round and slipping over.

Managed to break the right footpeg hanger on that one.
