Homegrown Muff.

Hi all.

After all these threads about handlebar muffs, I thought I'd have a go at making some for my bike, as heated grips just don't keep the cold out of the fingertips well enough.

I got some roll mat and set to work, using half a piece of pipe insulation as a support to fend off unwanted floppyness in wind, interfering with levers.

I offered the foam up to the handlebars and marked where I needed to cut.

I then stitched the foam together using cableties.

I used a small off cut of plastic pipe, cable tied into the outside wall to act as a bar end locator, and if I was to wrap the bar end in a few layers of tape, the bar end would fit this snug and help keep the muff in place even more.

I marked out where I wanted to cut for my hands.

I then used a leg from some waterproof trousers to make a sleeve for my arm, and used the cut off bottom of the leg to make a sleeve for the opening on the inside where the bar goes through, but I still have to glue these as I have no glue, so it will have to wait until I get to my GFs house tomorrow.

I know it's probably sacrilege to do this to a GSXR, but so what lol.

Nice - is that camping style roll-mat?
Be interested to hear how they turn out. Most tend to go up the arms a bit more. My tucanourbano ones are quite long, but very effective, however harder to get your hands back in. My Oxford ones are shorter (not as short as yours) but are easy enough to replace your hand that they're even fine off-road.

First thing I've done to my GSXR is stick some (bought) muffs on it - heated grips are on the way and a (maybe DIY) top box is definitely needed!

Yea they turned out a bit short indeed, but to be honest my gloves and jacket usually keep me warm, it's really only my fingers and thumb which cause problems, so hopefully the shortness wont be an issue.

And yes, it was a crappy camping roll mat, it may even have been a "Yoga" mat as it was pretty thin compared to my other mats.

Good work, it's cheaper than buying the actual stuff so what the hell if it doesn't look very aesthetically pleasing

Like the topic title, although handgrip muffs certainly wasn't the first thing that sprinted into my mind when I read it...

If you're not arsed about the cosmetic look then they're the shit. However, allot of people wouldn't do that to their bike, me included.

I did a quick design at about 4am in the morning for another topic, yes I know the hand I used, the thumb is outside the plastic but that's mean't to be so the whole hand goes in and some how attaches to the bike but most importantly, colour coded and somewhat aerodynamic to fit the bike as well.
