Can anyone shed light on why people seem to put what looks like a wrist band around their brake reservoirs?

Fashion, and if it leaks as those cylindrical ones can do as they are easily unscrewed to absorb the brake fluid and prevent it going all over the paint work.

They're used in racing to keep sunlight off the fluid reservoir to help prevent the brake fluid from heating up.

The ones with HRC embroidered on them add 10bhp.

I thought it was so if they leaked the racer didn't mistake it for rain on the screen.
