Hi, Im about to switch form a 900 ninja and other various previous road bikes to a enduro. Ill use it for forestrys, and old rovers roads etc in the area, but I still want to do hour long journeys on the road. (Ill probably get two sets of wheels to make this easier. Im pretty certainn on getting a drz400, and want as good a top road speed as possible. What model do I get? the E ot the S, ive been told the E, but id appreciate any advice please, or other suggestions. Thanks

The E is lighter and more powerful, so the one to go for, for off-roading.

If you want to do long-road journeys, I'd personally look at a TE610 or maybe a KTM LC4 based bike. These will have a bit longer legs for road use.

You can do long journeys on the DRZ, but it's less-ideal; the european bikes have more power, similar weight and better suspension. I've done some reasonable journeys on my KTM690 (note this new model is better than the older LC4s in various ways and mind is modded in various ways); including riding for up to seven hour and longer stints at a time (only fuel stops), including sections of off-roading.

If you're stuck on a DRZ, I'd definitely consider a CCM404 - these use the DRZ-E engine, yet have better suspension, brakes etc and are easy to swap wheels over.

As an idea, my KTM will top out at about 107mph, my CCM around 90mph. At 90mph the KTM still feels quite relaxed (and for the road, I'd go for higher gearing ideally), while the DRZ-engined CCM is flat out. Note speeds listed are genuine GPS speeds, the CCM was indicating 100mph.

S model is a fair bit more restricted, different cams and base gasket plus some other stuff.

Leads to about a 5bhp difference and a fair bit of difference throughout the rev range. Get an E if you can.

The S also weighs a bit more, which when you're trying to pick it up for the fifth time, or drag it out of a bog, doesn't make a decent difference.

I should clarify also, if you're looking to spend up to £1500 or so, I reckon the DRZ isn't a bad choice. Over that and I think I'd be looking at some of the bigger bikes as well.

As far as I know Reubon's is the SM, which uses the same engine etc as the S.

I also ride an SM (stock motor) so any questions regarding that and i'll try and answer them.

The 'only' differences between the S and SM are -

Wheels
Forks
Front brake (unsure about rear)
Swingarm
Handlebars (SM came with renthal fatbars after around '06)
Gearing may be slightly different

The E was never sold as a road legal bike, they were just a very easy conversion that didn't really cost that much. The E is lighter, more powerful (slightly more torque aswell) although the service intervals remain fairly similar throughout the DRZ's.

Ive got the S model, only reason i bought this version was for the digital display Laughing .
Ive never ridden the E model so don't what the power difference is like, or how lighter it is . Have dropped mine a few times now though and its not difficult to pick back up.

Depends what you want to know ??

S has the metal tank instead of plastic
digi display
rear footpegs (easy to take off but you need a peg eliminator)
Slightly bigger sub frame
Indicators etc etc
Less power

Don't no of anymore

Hope this helps

I have an SM as G mentioned.

I venture very lightly off-road as I only have 17" wheels.

If you go for an S lay aside £100 and a little bit of time to do some mods and get it up to scratch, or spend more (at least £300) and bring it up to the spec of the E engine (mainly the carb).

I'd go for whatever turned up at a good price in a good condition at the right time, but vere towards an E if possible.

Much to the dissapointment of people like G ( Wink ) I find the little DRZ to have enough power and be light enough to pick up, although I've never seriously taken mine off-road. Whicever model you get make sure you buy some case guards (about £30-40 for both sides) as the casings are quite thin and can crack if they hit a rock.

Pretty sure you were asking about more power at some point Wink.
If you find it's fine to pick up, you're not falling off enough Razz. It's more than that, though - ride decent trails for a decent number of hours and having to muscle the bike through quick bits and boggy bits soon makes every kg important.
Similarly, when you've got to pick a bike that's upside down on a steep down-hill, again, every kg counts.

I'm sure the power is fine for off-road and probably doesn't make a big difference - but for the road stuff I'd want taller gearing and more power to make that still work.

I think my CCMs got around the right amount of power for road-fun as a second bike, but wouldn't want to use it for general stuff on A roads or motorways.

Fixed And yeah I agree. Wink

Also as been mentioned if your going to be doing lots of motorways and A-roads then lets just say its not ideal Thumbs Down
