What should I be looking at for a decent shoe for running etc. Most of my trainers aren't really the running type (skateboard shoes and kswiss etc.)

I'm going to try some on this weekend but figure the monkeys at JJB or whatever won't have a clue.

Don't go to the likes of JJB, go to a proper sports equipment shop and have your feet and running style accurately gauged, then get the right shoe from there. Can't think of anywhere that does it closeby to our area, though - may have to googlez

Thats what I used to think but it's incorrect advice. Everyone runs differently and the wrong shoe can cause injuries (ask my achilles tendons).
Go to a running shop and they will video your style. They can then recommend which shoe types to try.
I paid £75 for mine and the tendons are now fine. Unfortunately I suffer badly from tight calf muscles, but thats not shoe related.

Just to echo the above. A proper sports equipment shop will ask you loads of questions about what you are going to be doing, look at your feet, look at your gait and recommend a shoe that suits.

My girlfriend went and they recommended some of the cheapest Asic trainers in the shop because she is dead light and has totally neutral foot balance.

My mate went and the guy was really appologetic, the best ones for him were nike airs because he is heavy and pronates his feet when he runs. He was appologetic because they are expensive and don't last very well.

well if you want to be pernickety about it...yes youre right.
For the average person into jogging/running for fitness (not the consumate professional athlete) an air cushioned sole would be preferable over most,if not all, other trainers. (sports insoles can be bought easily to correct imbalances/pressure points/gait etc)

If chris was a professional runner (wore spikes etc) he wouldnt be asking this question on bcf would he.
He`d already know where to go for a tailored fit.

Sorry MaxPower but I disagree with you, as I think when starting out with running and/or jogging for fitness getting the right footwear is probably the best thing you can do to ensure that firstly you continue and secondly you don't end up with a nasty injury. There have been several threads offering advice on footwear selection and training programmes. Messing up your knees is all too easy to do and not an easy mistake to rectify.

As for the gait analysis it's the best thing you can do - get yourself into a professional running oriented sports shop and get them to advise you. They will tell you whether you are neutral, over or under pronating and select the right trainer for you. You will also need to consider what terrain you will be starting out on - pavements or off-road as that will make a difference too.

As far as budget goes you will undoubtedly be able to get something entry level and suitable for around the £50 mark. The makes that are most common are Asics, Mizuno, Brooks, Saucony, New Balance. Nike do make a good running shoe too but with the likes of the more fashion oriented makes it can get confusing as to what you really need. Salomon do good off-road trail shoes. Running shoes are very personal like helmets, they don't suit everyone but it doesn't mean they're not any good.

As for where to go, look out for Up and Running and Runners Need as both country wide chains that may have a store near to you. Otherwise take a look online to see if you can find a devoted store as it's worth it!!

Certainly not pernickity and I'm hardly a professional runner. I'm speaking from experience. I had some generic air cushioned soles trainers and thought exactly the same as you, how much difference can they really make?
As it happens a massive amount and buying some shoes that suited my neutral gait stopped me coming home crippled after only 3 miles of running.
I'd say after watching myself running in slow-mo it's impossible to guess the type of shoe you really need because you really don't look how you feel like you're running, if that makes sense.

Like you i can only speak from personal experience so i guess theres some truth on either side.
I switched to quite expensive trainers years ago and have found that all air cushioned soles reduce the impact to my knees, as one would expect air cushioning to do because its there specifically for that purpose (to absorb shock)
Air cushioning wont rectify issues with gait though but special sports insoles can be bought for that,as said already.
I fail to see how a hard rubber sole (i presume thats what you must wear if you dont buy air cushioned ) can help your knees and shock absorption in any way though. It may improve gait due to its mouldings in specific weak point areas, but a hard rubber sole wont absorb shock as well as air cushioning will.

Don't know if it's any help as it'd be a bit of a day trip but there's a great shop in Portsmouth called Alexandra Sports. They'll spend ages measuring your feet etc. They'll even let you go for a jog around the block.

If you don't fancy the trip (wouldn't blame you) you might be able to give them a call and see if they can give you any advice...

She runs He runs in Bluewater is good. They have running machines with cameras to measure gait and will find something on the spot. Expect to pay £70 up though.

Here you go Up and Running and Runners Need.

I think the Liverpool Street one and the East Sheen and Dulwich ones should be fairly close to you, so you even get a choice!! I've not tried those particular stores, but I can thoroughly recommend the Up and Running store locally to me, so hopefully it's Company policy to be nice and helpful!! Mr. Green
