Hi

I after a new can for my '01 Hornet 600, just after a deeper sound and getting rid of the washing machine drum hanging there at the moment (although is truly an excellent heat sheild!).

I not got loads of moneh so been looking at Blueflame, Beowulf (put your knives away boys) but now seen this new one on ebay called "Pipe Werx". Looks ok, fancy laser etching, so was wondering if anyone know shite about them, their web site looks like they know a bit about exhausts so presume reasonable.

Leaning toward BF (if they agree to de-badge, such a crap logo) at the moment, so thoughts appreciated if any.

Ta Thumbs Up

Happy New Year to all Karma

Just buy the cheapest can you can find that you think 'looks okay'. Certainly wouldn't buy new. Exhausts are pretty much the same, so long as it's not from China costing £40, it'll do the same job as any other.

So if you're willing to spend £200 on a can, spend £80 on a 2nd hand Blue Flame one, £40 on a set of braided lines and the rest towards new front suspension springs. Transforms the hornet for sure.

Very interested in the general response to this (not dismissing the above post, but more is good, even if it only says the same thing) - I fancy one of the Titanium ones for my '00 Hornet. Thumbs Up

Seen these advertised a lot the past week or two. The company themselves have been in the car industry for yonks making performance systems for cars which is meant to be top notch. Can't say i've heard anything about their bike stuff though but tbh I would imagine it would be pretty decent and their products come with a lifetime warrenty too. It is a lot of money for an end can but then it certainly would stand out from the abundance of akras, blueflame, micron etc.

I'm with instigator. An exhaust is an exhaust.

I'm afraid 99% of people won't notice your exhaust has an 'x' cut in it to differentiate it to other exhausts - it's loud and black as far as they're concerned.
Lifetime guarantee they can easily claim 'oh, wear and tear for that bit', or that 'you've fitted it wrong' - if an exhaust is going to go wrong (being a tube of metal) it'll probably do it fairly soon, presuming it's not under stress.

Only time I can see it being worth while buying an expensive exhaust is if you're racing and are buying a full system to support airbox and fueling changes.
(If you're not racing, you might as well just get a bigger bike rather than the cost of the above if you want more power, presuming you don't have a recent super/hyperbike already.

I think I've only twice ever purchased exhausts (though have had them come with various bikes) and both were £200 or so, actually; but both second hand.
The first was a full system from a good brand to replace the battered one on my race bike (as it was all-ready set up for that system.) The other was for a dirt bike (new cost was over £400) because it saved around 5kgs on the original and when you've got to pick it facing down a rocky hill-side for the second time, that 5kgs starts to make a decent difference!

If you want to spend £200 because YOU like the looks and that's more important to you than handling etc, fair enough - but don't kid yourself many others will notice or it'll do better than cheaper ones Smile.

On the subject of exhaust recommendations. Do any of the known manufacturers make a more compact exhaust slipon for late 03-04 ZX9rs that isn't stupidly loud or vastly expensive? The usual glut of blue flames and vipers on ebay are virtually as large as the stock can. The ideal solution would be a racefit growler, but theres 0 chance of picking one up second hand and a new one would have to be made to order.

What about the racefit copies? I've heard some good things about some of them, but not sure if they do them for the zx9.
In the end, a small slip on is going to be pretty loud generally - as it's got less 'silencing' stuff - the racefits aren't exactly known for their quietness Smile.
Can always just cut up a bigger can.

Incidentally, I'll have a full titanium Arakovic system with extra Micron pipe as well for sale which should fit your bike. However, not really worth it, especially if you want a diddy can.

Hotbodies do one which is a lot cheaper, but they seem to have a bit of a reputation for rotting away rather quickly Confused

How different are the slip on dimensions between your GSXR and the 9?

Oh, and being loud isn't the end of the world, just the quieter it is = the more liberties I can take on the commute, I'd rather it wasn't as stupidly loud as the SP1 was mind Wink

I purchased a pair of Blueflame cans from the NEC and I have to say that I wouldn't use them again.

The cans look good, and sound nice - the note is better without being stupidly loud, although without the baffles they are very loud.

The problem I had was with the fit. They are just about OK now, but not perfect. There is a very light touching going on between the side stand and the link pipe. I think with some loosening and persuasion I'll be able to sort it out. Initially the LH pipe sat about 2" lower than the RH and about 2" further away from the tyre. Turns out they'd supplied incorrect spacers and bolts.

The customer service was shocking. I was told at the show that I'd definitely have them in 5-7 days. When I rang after 5 days to get an idea which courier they would be sent with (our security at work needed to know) I was told that they'd be sent out that day. The following day they said they hadn't been sent and that there was a 3 day delay. After 3 days I rung up and the said that they'd been shipped and would turn up the following day - the guy said he'd personally packaged them and handed them to the courier. When I rang the following day I was told they didn't get shipped - weird if the guy had personally handed them to the courier. This messing around happened another twice. I finally gave them a deadline and this time they turned up, only to have incorrect bits and be a bugger to get on. I ended up having to ride across to Skelmersdale to work out what was wrong with them as the telephone support was rubbish. It still took the guy 1/2 hour to work out that I had the wrong bits, despite me pointing out a few times that it looked like the spacer and bolt wasn't right. After about 2 hours we had them sorted, but a real pain in the arse. What was made worse was that every time I rang them I was promised a call back, which never occurred.

The only reason I persevered was that I got the pair from them for £250. Afterwards I found out on the cbf1000 forum that others had had the same poor experience. It seems like a potentially good product is let down by the company surrounding it.

I would certainly never use them again.

Dae

Erm, just to confirm - the full system I'll have available is from an E model ZX9.
If you still want dimensions, don't mind getting the vernier calipers out, but not sure what you're looking for.

The standard zx9 system is bolt-on, I thought (I do have stock zx9 headers, but never had them fitted and don't have a can to match.) The akrapovic system is slip-on, but obviously non-standard.

The GSXR exhaust includes a bit of mid pipe - the original can includes the exhaust valve.

Most of the growlers that crop up on ebay are GSXR thou jobbies, adapting one to go on the 9 looks like it'd be more hassle than it's worth though.

I don't think a bolt on would achieve much without it being a much shorter can, I'm not quite sure why but the E and F variant zx9s seem to be incompatible with each other as far as slip ons go, I'd wager the stock headers are a different shape as nothing else changed underneath the motor afaik?
