I am looking for a '04-'06 GSXR 600 at the moment to replace the smashed up Thundercat.

However, my Father is insisting I run it restricted on the road (won't last long I imagine).

I am wondering, is there any way I can restrict it with a PCIII? I.e. then when I take the bike on the track I can change it back to normal output with a plugin of a flash drive rather than having to faff around with ECUs without making it run like a dog on the road.

Sorry if this should be in the Workshop, this forum seemed more appropriate, cheers.

Not sure about power commanders but I do know someone who "restricted" a GSXR750 with a Yoshimura box. Made the bike run like a sack of shite mind.

Now I'm unsure about the validity of this claim, as it was from some pedboi website like 125sportsbikes I think.
They claimed they had a Tuneboy/Power Commander type device which had dual mapping so you could change it at the flick of a switch on the device, from a restricted map to the optimised map.
Since finding that however I searched for a good 10 mins on google for such a device to no avail. I can only assume it was one of two things:
A lying pedboi
2 PCs on a homemade circuit. (that would cost more than 500 quid I'd imagine.)

I'd imagine twas the former, but I can't say fo' sho'.

EDIT: The PC5 has dual map switching. Don't believe this product was available last time I searched. Now you've just got to find out if it fits an 04-06 gsxr6.
It also has autotune, so getting one map to 33bhp would really only require a shot on a garages dyno/RR.

I'm sure you could do it but you'd need a dyno and a technician to make your 33bhp map as all the maps on the dynojet website (and elsewhere) are optimal power maps for various different exhaust/filter setups.

So you'd need a PC5 and an hour or so dyno time. So you're looking at £350 minimum really.

You do actually get the software with the PCIII USB (and PCV?) to customise the map yourself but it'd likely run like a dog if you tried to cut the power all that much, and you'd be guessing about the outcome in terms of bhp.

It'd be dooable with a PCIII USB and a cheapo little netbook, a lot of hassle though Confused

It's a lot less hassle than removing carbed restrictors or changing ECUs all the time. Laughing.

The PC5 sounds good, but only for '08+ bikes iirc.

How about the cheaper/easier option of a throttle stop? That's what I have Wink

If I can flick it on/off on the fly as and when needed i.e. when my Dad rides the bike, where do I buy? Laughing.

Hi

Not sure that the power commander would provide enough adjustment to the fueling / ignition to lose 2/3 of the power.

If it could then I suspect it would run very badly when restricted.

One way it could be done easily would be if you could reprogram the secandary throttles. This would make it a doddle to restrict. However I don't think the power commanders have this function.

All the best

Keith

Exactly what he said. Anybody who claims to have restricted a bike to 33bhp using this method is a liar.

Well my r6 just had a throttle stop so the bike ran perfect, but it just couldnt rev round all the way. Of course it was removed after 2 weeks of owning the bike and its a 15 mintue job.

Id consider that?

The point is I'm ideally looking for something that can be flicked on/off as when needed for several reasons, some of which;

#1: If the police catch me unrestricted again due to the accident they have stated they WILL throw the book at me this time.

#2: It will be ridden by my Dad who isn't restricted.

Hence why I ideally want something that can be flicked on/off. Is there any way to do this with a throttle stop? I guess I could just bodge something with a few minutes on a dyno.

Well i know alpha technik are the manufacturers of restirctors for a wide range of bikes. The throttle stop on the r6 just involved taking the side fairing off and bolting it on the restrict the amount of throttle used. Easy enough. I know what you mean by just having some sort of button to switch fueling from 33 bhp to full power but that would truley knack up your bike i would imagine. Mechanically restricting the throttle wont harm it at all just it takes slightly longer to fit.

Im out of my restriction time and 2 years riding unrestricted i wasnt hasseled by any coppers once. If its up to me id say as along as u know how to ride and aint a hooligan lol just dont restrict the bike lol saves time, money and is a hell of a lot more fun !

#1: Err, if the police impound your bike to check it is restricted then you'll get the book thrown at you even more so, or even if they spot the switch.

#2: Tough shit.

Either restrict it and ride it restricted, or don't bother and make yourself a certificate in MS word. If you have switchable maps it makes no difference and you're still riding it unrestricted, but you've cost yourself more money, hassle and complexity.

Personally I think the chances of being caught are slim (At least where I live), and as long as you don't ride like a dick in front of the rozzers you'll get no issues. Completely up to you of course.

Not sure whether a court would count that as restricted. No more so than saying "of course it is under 33hp, I only open the throttle by 1/3 max".

With a power commander you can lose power either by over richening the mixture, leaning the mixture right off, retarding the ignition and over advancing the ignition. First would make it drink petrol and run badly (and wash oil from the bores, and foul the plugs), 2nd would probably result in it running dangerously lean and hot, 3rd would be possible but expect it to be quite horrible to ride, while the 4th would probably destroy the engine before it got it down to 33hp.

All the best

Keith

Once again THROTTLE STOP. I think it's pretty easy to remove, looking at mine I think you just have to remove one screw but I've never tried it Thumbs Up

Could you remove the cables (or actuator, or whatever), and open them to 1/3, manually?

Would the ECU get upset if you did that?

Hi

Possibly (and I wouldn't be surprised if the ECU whinged about it), but that wouldn't be an easily switchable mod for the OP.

Suspect the problem with the poor low down power people complained about with the early ZZR14 was due to the ECU not opening the throttles (as removing the secondary throttle largely fixed the problem). But it appears nothing yet allows you to easily remap the secondary throttles.

All the best

Keith

Depends how easy it is to get at the throttle bodies, and Paulingtons definition of easy i guess lol.

It's truely impossible to restrict a 110bhp bike to 33bhp using a PC3 or similar to re-map the fueling and ignition. You could set the rev limit at a silly low speed like 5000rpm, which might be 33bhp, but why do you then need a 160mph chassis and braking system?

The manufactuer would not be able to sell a bike restricted in this way if it had a really unusable rev range, and you wouln't want to ride it set up like this anyway.

I don't know your previous situation, but if your riding under a 33bhp restricted licence for 2years or part of that period, then you should either have the bike restricted by a dealer, and leave the restriction in place until the end of your restricted period, or else unrestrict the bike afterwards and just ride it illegally if that is the way you want to go?

I'f it's your bike then how can your dad insist you that you must have the restriction in place, even though he is right in saying that is the correct thing to do legally.

This is why i have never liked restricted big bikes, and if i was limited to 33bhp id search for as long as it takes to find an interesting but fun natural sub 33bhp bike to ride.

I think by and large I'm going to end up restricting it myself with a restricted ECU or a throttle stop and when I want to take it on the track just have to swap out ECUs or take off the throttle stop.

I need a 160mph braking system and chassis due to it will be tracked so I don't fancy a shitter 33bhp bike.

He can insist because he is my father and being 17 I'm of no age to start defying him yet, that and he's paying for it.

I'll just restrict it myself, much easier.

He crashed and then told the police it wasn't restricted.

it seemed to work out ok as he didn't get prosecuted for it.

The PC3 can apparently change fueling to -100% or +100%, presuming -100% is nothing, I expect it would be possible to restrict it in this manner.
The PC-V has a dual-mapping option, the PC3 does not. The PC5 also has the capability to control both sets of injectors (with additional hardware). PC-V is apparantly only available for the latest bikes (though, I wonder if it could be retro-fitted to many older bikes anyway.)

Were it me, I think I'd try and make up a little box that did the dual job of restricting throttle movement and increasing throttle travel, so you still get the feel of a fairly normal throttle.
Should be pretty easy to take out, but also, should you crash, would be obvious that it was engaged.
Ideally, if you are planning to run it restricted for a while, I'd down gear it a load as this is often where bigger bikes suffer when restricted - the naturally 33hp has maybe fourth gear going to 75mph, while the 600 sports bike at 33hp still has first gear going to 75mph.
