Nissan xtrail

Currently thinking of changing our car (Focus) and the Mrs Beatnck likes the look of the xtrail.

Anyone here got one/had one/ And if so how did/do you find it?

Decent car, the early diesels had issues with turbos failing regularly so research that, other than that it's good for what it is - an average sized soft roader, it's no land rover off road but will cope with light off roading no problem, works well on the road, reasonable on fuel for a 4wd. Do you actually need 4WD though, would an estate not be safer, cheaper and more practical if you're staying on tarmac?

Dont really need 4wd, its just that the mrs has a bad back and because the xtrail is a bit higher up she finds it easier to get in and out.

I dont want an mpv, she doesent want a mondeo estate (which tbh would be my choice..)

So the xtrail is currently top of the list. Ive driven a few a while back, was quite impressed, but its always nice to hear other people opinions Thumbs Up

X-Trails are crap, I broke one within a couple of days of having it. Laughing

If you don't want 4wd then don't get a 4x4, as you'll be paying extra in running costs and in tax but not using what you're paying extra for.

Dont get me wrong, i'll use it - used to play a lot in a lightweight v8 landie in all the lovely mud.

No doubt the Nissan wont be a patch on that for mud plugging ability though.

Trouble is we need a bigger car, i know what i would go for but she is very particular... Bloody women Neutral

Not a fan of them at all, seem a bit plasticy and I have heard of poor build quality. If it was me I would go for a Freelander Td4. Good on fuel for a 4x4 and very good all rounder.

+1 on the free lander.
Just get the FL2, not the older freelanders.

They are same tax band as the xtrail i believe, a bit higher up, more comfy, and can pull a train! Smile

If you do get an older FL, steer clear of the K series engines...

I heard the freelanders were really shoddily built and unreliable, am i right in thing the FL2 were a big step up then?

The missus always wanted a Freelander, until I saw the issue of Top Gear where they showed one as a result of ( I think ) a 30/40 mph smash, the car was a right off, the front end was more of a middle bit as all that was left was the bonnet, the steering wheel had shot upwards, the peddles were all over the place, the said they would have smashed your legs and the crumple zones around the drivers door were exactly that, crumpled, they couldn't even shut the doors...

I think the Star rating was a 3* if I remember rightly, they recommend you have a 4* upwards...

The above was a Mk 1 I believe...
