Yamaha DT125R

Payed £750

1998 with 8k on the clocks

Thumbs Up Quick, big size for a 125, handles "ok", good brakes, sounds ok to, not a tinny noise like most 2t's

Thumbs Down not very economical , 50mpg at best

Make
Honda
Model
CG125
Year
2004
Price
£1200 - I bought an incredibly shiny low mileage one!
Good & Bad Points
Thumbs Up - Light, quick enough, great handling and good on fuel, and my version has the electric start and much better front disk brake Mr. Green
Thumbs Down - only does 65

The downside is how much I've spent on the thing getting it from what would have been a Cat D write off back to being a bike a learner would buy again - about £600. Was a fun project and I loved the thing just too much to bother making a claim and losing my NCB anyway.

Make
Honda

Model
Varadero XL125 V

Year
2003

Price
£1,000 when I bought it.

Good
Big, comfortable V twin that looks bigger than a 125, sounds meaty and will cruise at 65 all day and hit 70. Ideal for me and anyone whos tall, great brakes and so easy to ride. Nice tall seating position which gives you a good view of everything around you and because of its size gives you good presence on the road. Large fuel tank with a range of about 220 miles. Nice big tyres / wheels.
Fairly easy to work on and spares readily available, personally I love this bike, if it was made in a 250 & 500 I'd buy one once I pass my test Very Happy

Bad Points
Not the fastest acceleration wise, orignal tyres are a bit crappy and need to be replaced to get the best out of the bike, its heavy for a 125 but will help getting you used to a bigger bike. orignal mirrors need to be replaced if you want to see more than your elbows, also would be better with taller screen as standard

Nice to see the replies guys Thumbs Up

Can't believe you're still bikeless dunc! I wouldn't be able to handle life anymore without my bike, even going a week without riding it, i feel sad Sad

Some legendary bikes, like the good old CG Wink

Since i'm the OP, i've got to put mine down Very Happy

Well here's my bike...

Make
Hyosung
Model
XRX 125D
Year
2007
Price
£1050
Good & Bad Points

Thumbs Up Very reliable, brilliant fuel economy, about 100mpg, looks nice, love the huge USD forks, great fun to ride, standard tyres handle well in all weathers, comfy, soft suspension, sounds good standard, clocked 73mph without back winds or downhill advantage, with going 1 tooth down on the rear sprocket, i can now hit 70mph in 4th, it's big in size and has been mistaken for a 400 by an ER6 rider.

Thumbs Down No fuel gauge, have to check the tank, it's not the fastest off the line, acceleration is slightly worse with rear sprocket going 1 tooth down. That's about it, although there are some minor flaws, i've been chuffed to bits with the bike Thumbs Up

Yeah mate it's not nice...

injuries have healed up nicely though, if i had the money and the weather was a bit better i'd buy another bike.

Hopefully the insurance should be sorted out soon, and i'll buy a nice bike and pass the test Thumbs Up

Some nice bikes here though.

Aprilia RS 125 2008 - paid £3200 (brand new)

Good & Bad Points

Good:
- it screams
- it's fast enough to keep up with big guys, unless you're on a dual carriageway
- it's light
- it has very good brakes
- it handles like a dream
- simple mechanicaly so easy to service

Bad:
- poor commuter as it can be temperamental in cold weather
- good 2 stroke oil is quite expensive
- can be unreliable if not looked after properly

EDIT: A photo..

Make: Honda
Model: CG125
Year: 2002
Price: Bought for £500 in Dec 07 (absolute bargain!!)
Good: We all know what the CG is good for. Everything but the motorway (and pillions. And hills. And keeping up with traffic.. etc) Very Happy
Bad: 124cc 4-stroke (i.e. the throttle doesn't really do much).

It's my spare bike - sat out the back in pieces in the process of being fixed up after being sat a year.

Hey, my speedo has seen 75 on it before, proper 5th gear 9000RPM torture Laughing what's with the black and white photo? I can't remember if my speedo has those gears indicated next to the speeds as well but from memory those speeds are just about the maximum speed each gear will do.

Too cold to go outside and bother checking now.

Yours probably won't (2004 model yes?), IIRC yours has got a rev counter instead. The 2001-2003 CG125 doesn't have a rev counter, and from the engine noise i used to get, you probably should've changed gear by then indeed Wink

I did see 73 once, on the motorway just as you enter Wales from England, it's quite steeply downhill for a stretch Thumbs Up

No idea about the black and white, but someone asked for pictures, and it was the only one i had to hand Wink

Make - Honda

Model - CBF 125

Year - 2009

Price - £1900 new

Good points - £5 gives me around 100 - 130 mpg, easy to ride and filter with, just enough power to pop a wheelie Mr. Green

bad points - no rev counter, tops out at 65mph or 72 mph downhill

Correct about 2004 incorrect about rev counter. No factory CG has a rev counter as far as I know. I'm interested in getting a digital one I can connect to my spark plug and mount on my handle bars or something. Oh, and yes I know what you mean, definitely best not to wait until 8K to change gears!

125's currently in my possesion ;
1986 Suzuki rg125 gamma ; (micron exhaust fitted along with mikuni vm32 carb) great wee bike. keeps up with the rs's +mito's up to about 60ish then trails behind, still manages over 80 though.
very reliable, cheap parts + a doddle to work on
bad points : its a bit small + light so gets blown around at high speeds

1986 Honda mtx125 (sometimes fitted with a 200cc engine) good bike for peanuts. easy to work on.reliable.faster than you would think from an 80's trailie.good in the rain.
more bad points had with the 200cc atac engine. but its scruffy, leaks oil & looks wose than it is.

1992 mk2 Cagiva mito . italian import (full power from new) currently being restored
unable to give any opinions as i havnt ridden it properly yet, except to say its a bit of a bitch to work on, much like any other italian 125.

+ tommorow picking up another Aprilia rs125 (7th i have owned) year 2000, full power, condition yet to be seen. (watch this space)
good points (generally) easy(ish) to work on, extremely fast & easy to make them go even faster!
plenty of spares to be had.
bad points : too many of them have been owned by first timers who havnt a clue about bikes never mind highly temperamental italian 2 strokes & are thrashed to within an inch of their lives or have been "modified" by way of bolting on anything that they thinks makes it go faster without thinking about the basics!
this is what gives them a bad reputation.
in all the rs's i have owned, all have been trouble free. (except for the one i fitted an old worn 34mm carb to-lesson learned though)
cheers,
GAZ

Make: Gilera

Model: SC125

Year: 2008

Price: I paid £1400 for it.

Good Points:
Fun little runabout, pokey on power, flickable and will overtake if needed, looks great and does what it's supposed to do, sounds less "Wasps in the Endcan" than a regular two stroke too.

Bad Points:
Horrible for pillions, although if you use it as a Learner 125 that won't matter too much. Too LITTLE power, could do with spicing up really. Brakes are sharp at the lever but leave a lot to be desired in actual braking capacity.

Obligatory picture:
