rode out into the country with a mate for a ride/drive (he was in a car) and in the middle of the country he let me drive his car (he must have some guts...) it was pretty easy because the most difficult part is clutch control, but as thats pretty similar to a bike i picked it up pretty quick....although its comfy and warm, it just doesnt compare to a bike in terms of being fun, it doesnt feel like you're really doing anything....just sitting there moving a bit...

Never drove a car myself, always wondered about how the feel of the steering is with it not being as 'direct' as a bike?

i despise the way a steering works in a car

20 turns of the wheel at a standstill for full lock, whats that about?
(ok i know its not quite that, but it feels like such a stupid design)

and yes at speed sensitive steering would be bad, but still, another reason i dislike cars Razz

Bikes don't have accelerators they have throttles Wink and you can't compare them as they are totaly different machines.

Cars are brilliant, I don't see why so many bikers are against them. When its -2 outside and raining, the jokes on you! The bikes are fun yes, but a car can be just as fun in an empty car park.

Whacking on the hand brake in some else's pick up on a gravel car park is fun Shifty

Cars are fun too (if you rag them) but not as fun as bikes. Although a car licence is on my list for this year as I can't be f*cked riding thruogh another winter Praying

I drove a car just after I passed my bike test and I hated it!

Having 4 foot of metal to the left of you and being used to something not more than foot wide was weird.

I had hold of the steering wheel that hard the instructor couldn't move the wheel when I made a mistake either. Laughing

So I stopped taking lessons and thought car's ain't for me!

If I ever need an extra seat or wheel, for when I have kids or something I'll just get a bike and sidecar. Smile

I used to quite like chucking the old 106 into the bends, It handled remarkably well and never lost grip much. It felt like driving a go kart Wink Cars can be fun, you just need the right one Razz

As for the steering, you get used to it. The lack of acceleration has always annoyed me though.

I agree, cars are fabulous things! To drive can also be enjoyable when you know what your doing, especially in the 'right' car Cool
They are warm, comfortable, and great if you need to transport people/things from place to place (well you can't fit 'much' on a bike really can you?). Particularly for motorway work since a cars tyres a pretty much squared off already Laughing
The only real complaint I have about them is that darn bit of metal that completely cuts across your line of vision Confused!

I beg to differ. Very Happy

The only limits are how many straps and bungees you have to hand. I've managed to fit a minimoto, a range of spare wheels, tyres, and other assorted bit on the back of my one with no problems. I've also managed to have on the back of it all my stuff for RNB last year, lots of general stuff and a BBQ on all at the same time without anything falling off. Use some imagination and the sky is your limit. Laughing

Cars are great for general use, I wouldn't want to do without one. There's no comparison in performance terms though (unless you've got a shed load of money to spend on a motor). I use the bike all year round because I hate to sit in traffic and parking at work is a nightmare, but if I am going shopping or out in the evening with friends etc i'm afraid to say, the car rules.

Cars are good, but very different to bikes.

I hated them at first on my lessons. I didn't like being so close to the white line, I didn't like have 4 corners to keep from hitting things, the total lack of acceleration, they way it felt in corners.

This was in a 1 litre toyota yaris mind.

Now I have my nice big 2.6 auto merc, its different. The acceleration still feel totally sluggish compared to a bike, except for when you kick it hard doing about 30. You wait about 2 seconds, then feel a big kick behind you and watch the speedo needle climb rapidly. Makes a lovely sound too.

Cars good. Bikes good.

I believe the correct answer to this post, to coin a phrase is: "what do you want... a fucking sweetie!?!?"

And i do need to get my car test done, but i need to practice in a huuge carpark with nothing in hitting distance cos i suck.
Also i believe cars have an ok amount of acceleration, if you dont realise your about to do i. Dump the clutch at high revs in reverse accidentally when moving the cars out is all im gonna say (i have a stupidly long tight drive and soemtimes i need to move the cars, first time i tried... death nearly claimed the door. And the tree behind us.

Exactly.

So many people on here are quick to diss the noble car, when many of them have driven maybe once or twice. Once you know what you're doing they're fun. Of course you might hate them at first, you're *learning* and everything is alien and feels wrong. Bikes will always feel more natural at first, partly due to the fact that everyone will have spent quite a lot of time on a bicycle as a kid.

I love my bike. I love my car. My bike's fast, it handles well, it's exciting. My car's dependable, handles okay, goes okay and will still do 450 miles to a tank when pulling a trailer with two bikes on it. Thumbs Up

Much as I'd love a 'performance' car, I can't justify it while I have a bike. Saying that cars are boring is a sweeping generalisation - I rode an SR125 once. It was shit. That doesn't mean that a gixxer thou is, just like your diesel Fiesta being shit doesn't make the Porsche GT3 shit.

Anyone want to buy me a GT3 so I can prove this? Very Happy
Please.

Well put Bendy,
I've driven car's for 10 years and bikes for 1.

And yes Bikes are more exhilerating on your own.

However;
1 - I have a family so Have a renault scenic. Job done
2 - Two years ago I used to support tennis clubs around the country, so needed to travel, with tools. Queue one Audi A4 2.4 V6 30v That was also fun and darn comfortable when i did nearly 40,000 miles that year. !!!

each to there own. Bikes can be fun, cars can be fun and often more practical.

Hi

I like cars and bikes, although I prefer bikes. There are plenty of fun cars built, although most are built to be cheap and reliable (most cars are aiming for the kind of people who would buy a Deauville).

Some cars are damn fast, and most have far better aerodynamics so loose less acceleration as speeds go up.

All the best

Keith
