In a boat, big wave and in the down part, we hit the bottom of the channel we were in. Was really weird, everything went slowmo and then suddenly rushed about 20ft upwards with the wave.

Probably the most surreal things I've witnessed in my life are from when I used to live in Hawaii (for more than a year). While there I witnessed many stupidly surreal sunsets with the largest cruiser ships on earth in the bay in the foreground (not to mention the palm trees etc. all around).

While there I also went to the top of the volcano (14,000 feet up, highest mountain on earth if measured from bottom of the sea bed). There's usually snow up there but thank goodness there wasn't this time. There's 40% less oxygen up there or something and the cars were burning oil like crazy to get up there but it is where they have those massive observatories and telescopes and the most amazing view of the island and ocean all around (way above the clouds).

And then there's the green flash. If there isn't a single cloud in the sky and you are staring at the sun as it disappears from view the entire sky lights up green for a split second - it's quite breath taking but impossible to describe. The sun is pretty big and sets slowly as it is in that part of the world.

The 20 - 40 foot waves I got to play in at the beach are hard to describe too, that and the cliff jumping, "blow holes", giant turtles, dolphins, coral reef and the way they feast over there. Oh and the lava flows that you can walk next to and melt your shoes on / die if you fall in to if you're not careful. Playing with real lava is very surreal.

Finally they hold the iron man triathlon there as well, where you watch people swim 2.4 miles, bike 114K and then run a marathon. To see athletes do that....

You know what I really miss living there, I need to go back Sad

Crashing i guess,

Road - Sky - Road - Sky - Grass - Mud- Sky - Sky

No actually i just remembered my most surral moment.

Was working on my old Hornet in a mates garage, he had one of those classic garage doors that are quite heavy and pivot up, his was broken was was held up with a broken bit of broomstick.

Somehow i managed to walk back into this bit of wood holding the door up and had the full force of it smack directly on the top of my head.

Instantly got that starry feeling tingling down my spine, i lost nearly all motor function, i just stared at my mate, said i need to sit down and collapsed back on the floor. At no point was i knocked out but sitting there on the floor the impact had jarred my nerves or something, as although i could move my hands and legs i had no feeling in them, so im on the floor doing the muscle action to make my hand wave basically also seeing double, very surral my arms felt like flappy jelly and everything seemed to be at about 10FPS.

A horse spoke to me once. I have absolutely no proof, but I walked past and it went "alright mate".

I saw a typhoon or a waterspout, about 10 feet away from me.

Where I used to live had a big lake at the bottom of the garden, an old brick or clay pit turned into a wildlife reserve. There were 'banks' of reeds going this way and that, but one suck bank ended at next doors' garden, creating a 'corner' of water. While out in the garden, about 6ish one summer evening I heard a hissing sound. No wind to speak of, wasn't cold or cloudy, just a normal summers afternoon really.

I saw what I thought was smoke coming up from the reeds, and thought they might be on fire, so called my dad over to look. Then, before both our eyes, this typhoon came past us. About 2 feet high, then 'smoke' (obviously water vapour) going up to about 40 feet in the air. Massive rushing sound and really odd effect on the water around it, like you'd dropped a stone in, but the water had frozen that way.

Lasted about 10 seconds. When it died out I looked at dad and said "did I just see that?" we laughed and said nobody would ever believe it!

I was wandering round a celtic music festival while in a chemically enhanced state, wearing a large black top-hat with an alien embroidered on the front.

There was a lull in the music then a feeling of expectation in front of the main stage. The next band started playing, the lights went up and I was confronted with the sight of around 200 hippies moshing and pogo-ing to the sound of a 3-piece thrash metal band that consisted of 1) Electric bagpipes 2) A slide didgeridoo and 3) A hurdy-gurdy.

The hippies all had psychadellic fairy wings made from tights stretched over bits of bent water pipe sticking out of the back of their jackets covered in UV reflective paint.

I found this to be quite a surreal experience. I checked with several people later and they assure me it did really happen.

Another time I was in a pub up in the Highlands, similarly chemicaly enhanced. There had been a band playing the sort of "shortbread tin" accordian and guitar music that American tourists expect. Later on in the night, I heard pink floyd starting on the juke box, then realised there wasn't one. One of the band members was making his axe wail. The entire pub had gone quiet and was stood up looking to see where the music was coming from. He carried on for a good hour.

The same night, I distinctly recall chatting up a fit looking Scandinavian girl who was wearing a pretty convincing false moustache for some reason I never got to the bottom of.

Again, both things really happened.

As a total aside, I saw someone trying to fuck a cat one night. It was a late run on the Northern line and I boarded what looked like an empty carriage to find an exceedingly drunk vagrant with an irate feline in hand, attempting to effect coitus. The thing was he had the cat the wrong way around, every time he brought it near his genitalia the cat would get its claws in, grab a mouthful and spit.

I debated stepping in to stage a rescue but reached the conclusion that a) the cat was not only holding its own but getting a free meal, and b) any man who can have a domestic cat taking chunks out of his tackle and still be standing, let alone attempting to commit a sexual act, is someone I really don't want to pick a fight with.

The minute I got a spinal after hours of pain, I felt nothing , I was calm and totally not freaked about being numb all over. And knowing someone was cutting into me didnt bother me. I couldnt see what they where at and nore did I want to but my other half said he could see in the reflection of the light me being cut open and a baby being lifted out. Sounds scary I know but it was very quick and appreciated after hours of trying.

Then just staring at the roof wanting to hear that first cry , it felt like forever till I heard it and I panicked that something was wrong. I got to hold him for a few seconds then his dad got him while I got sown back together.

How weird the whole thing was. 9 months in my belly then being handed a baby, thats surreal. It doesnt sink for a while after.

I barely remember the pain believe it or not, I know it was sore but worth it.

I cant think of a more surreal moment that was legal in my life.

Festival surreality

I saw two lobsters and a crab play Kid Kudi's 'Day and Night' on a Kazoo and an out of tune guitar whilst at a festival in Amsterdam in the Summer. Mental.

For everyday surreal, I saw an old guy with one of his eyeballs hanging out in Woolworths about 15 years ago. It was all shrivelled and brown. Nasty.

Having to deal with a tank driver who is totally stoned out of his head and has the biggest spliff you've ever seen in his hand while under heave attack with mortars, rockets and heavy machine guns. I mean this spliff was about ten inches long and almost an inch diameter and there were bloody great bangs a flashes going off all round, he just thought it was fantastic fireworks.
