Hello!

So i'm going to take the 2 day DAS licence and I'm working on what bike to buy.

I will be using it to go to work (only about 10miles there and back) on weekdays and for fun at weekends.

I wanted a yamaha xvs 650 but its out of my price range.

I found this...

I love the look (retroish) and the price is fine the only thing I'm worried about is the mileage.

Is 47k too much?

I dont want it to blow after a month.

I dont mind giving the bike a good service and once over when I get it.

What do ya think? If you guys ok it, I'll get it asap.

As long as it has been serviced, the engine will probably roll on for many many more miles hassle free, but I'd expect imminent expense in brake disc, bearings etc etc - unless they have just been replaced?!?!?

You also have to consider it will be worthless come sale time as with millage like that on it, your market will be very small!! Is a 'normal' millage one really nay more expensive than that one?!!?!? Thinking

Would shop around a bit myself. And try to avoid a dealer if possible. You could probably get a similar bike, with lower mileage, for around the same money.

A lot of people I know unload problematic vehicles off to dealers and PE for better ones. Just because a dealer is selling it is no guarantee of quality ( I am not saying that bike isa nail but take care).

There should be a few ZR7's around. They were 'The' kawasaki budget naked until the Z750 replaced it.

They are widely known as the blandest bikes known to man, and to be honest that is quite a lot of money for a 47k bike which nobody wants.

Look for one privately or buy a 600 Hornet which is lighter, got more power, more common and better looking. And its a Honda and is very reliable.

I think its safe to say that the responses so far indicate you might find better value for money elsewhere. We're pretty good at the whole "What bike should I get?" thing on here. At the end of the day, a bike from a dealer should come with some warranty (sometimes not worth the paper), you won't get that with private. However, as has been said above, it is still someones bike and there is a big argument that people who trade in bikes take less care of them as they can pass their bike on 'guilt free' (people don't see dealers as 'real' people).

If you go private, take a mate with you, even if they don't really know any more about bike than you, they won't have the same new bike glazed look/tinted glasses you will and will be more subjective.

Kawasaki have never been known for their build quality like say honda, they have got better over the recent years, but that bike is 10yrs old ....

It's another bike from a dealer...which means you'll be paying more than it's actually worth. Dealer will probably have paid about a grand for it...which, along with the description, would make me wary. Might be fine. But if you are serious, give it very close inspection and look for the obvious signs of a trip down the road or high mileage.

You can go for a dealer if you want, its not a crime. That sounds like a good deal to me. Its a much better bike for the money.

I'd always try and buy something that will 'sell'. As others have pointed out, you need to consider whether you will ever be able to get money back out of it should you want to sell it later.

One tip you could try is to pop into a few dealers or call them and describe the bike that you're interested in and say that you want to trade it in. Sometimes they will quote you - stick 10% onto that and you've got a realistic private value.

You might get a shock with what they offer you though!
