Turbo YZF-R125

I know nothing about turbo's, but ones I have seen have always been on multi cylinder engines. So, could a turbo work on a single like the r125?

Yeah, in theory they can work on any engine. All they do is force more air into the engine. More air + more fuel = more power.

Some do work alot better than others however...

A turbo version for big 4 stroke dirt bikes like Husabergs is popular for snow use.
I'd worry that the 125 wouldn't flow enough exhaust gases to be useful, but then it's hardly going to be a project that's going to be 'useful' anyway .

Sorry, I didn't mean a factory 'version' - you can get an aftermarket turbo kit for them. People also bore them out to 750cc and more for dessert racing - lots of grunt when the 650 is one of the meatiest singles as it is.

750 sounds mint as well, I love the look of Bergs but there "Husaboom" reputation has always put me off.

Later ones aren't too bad - but then you're talking a very highly tuned light weight competition bike. Bikes like the CRF450 aren't too great either, despite being 'a Honda'.

Does seem fairly pointless other than as a project for the hell of it, given it'll still be slower than countless other cheaper bikes and doesn't really fill any particular niche.

I'm thinking of turbocharging an MX5 this year though which should be fun...if a little gay.

The R125 engine won't take the punishment of a turbo for long anyway. I've got photos of a standard one that's destroyed itself from the inside.

yeah you can add one if you have the cash, there was a guy who added a super charger and nos system to a 125 and bored it out 200cc and that was putting out 90bhp at the back wheel but cost him about 40k or something silly

I probably may be wrong but isnt the modern trend to turbo for efficiency rather than turboing for power?

This is just something I have gleaned from modern car trends and I think it mainly applies to diseasels. Anyone car to expand of this?

It is a more efficient way of getting more power.

Diesels have the "advantage" that they do not have a throttle, hence not going to stall the turbo when you back off to change gear.

Looks like Alfa are pulling a bit of a sneaky trick. The new Mito has what they call their DNA system, with a switch to change the chars character. Changes a few things such as the weight of the steering and the power delivery. Bet that it is tested for CO2 emissions and all that rubbish in the default basic economy setting, while the sporty setting swaps to a decent map for fueling and boost.

Same company these days, and same group of engineers do the engines now.

Last real true Alfa engine was the old V6 that was retired a couple of years ago.
