should you use moly grease on the cam and valve seats?

How much, just a light covering?

Does the oil have to be changed after the first run to get rid of the residue?

Please help, I'm clueless Very Happy

im not sure if it's something that 'must' be done or just one of those extra things manuals say to hinder progress Laughing , but i never used it when re-installing the cams after doing the valve clearences on the cbr, and that's still going fine.

If i didn't need the bike back together for work the next day then i probably would have used it to be on the safe side, so if your not pressed for time then i would say yes, do it.

You don't need any on the valve seats, but you should put it on the cam journal faces and the cam lobes.

I take it this motor has been apart (head off) and you are putting it together again???

After installing the cams, I tend to pour some oil over everything in the cam area, this fills the head a bit and 'pools' the oil where it would normally pool, any excess goes down the cam-chain gully, so you can't do any harm (obviously if the crankcase is already at max oil level, then don't go adding 4L of oil up-top Wink).

As for changing the oil, I don't think this is necessary, the amount of grease you are using compared to the volume of oil is minuscule. But if it makes you feel better, then change it!! Thumbs Up

The head has been off. It's getting a new head, cam and rocker arms (from a bike with only 2000 miles). I'm desperately worried about wrecking the new top end as these bikes are sensitive to low oil levels and that's why it needs a new head in the first place! Razz

Cheers everyone Karma

Damage to the old top-end was:

- Cam lobes worn severely (almost square in profile!)
- Rocker arm surfaces gouged
- Cam journals have bits of metal gouged out of them

Very Happy

If you grease it up with moly, pour some oil into the head/cam area, then it will be no worse for the cams/head than any other cold start ... if anything slightly better!! Wink

I don't think I've ever greased it up. Always lots and lots of oil thought.

Is the grease just a bit more inital lube?

I've always just slung loads of engine oil over everything during and after assembly.

Turning the engine over quite a few times with the plug out and petrol off before trying to start it isn't a bad plan either. Gets all the oilways primed and up to pressure.

Have you checked and cleaned any filters on the oil pickup side? Some bikes have a gauze in there, either on the end of the pickup or on the inlet to the pump itself.

Not sure about the GNs (might not even have one) but this is what is responsable for the old GPz305s eating their top-ends. I'd imagine quite a few superdreams rattled themselves to oblivion as a result of a blocked oil feed gauze too.

Can't hurt to check before bunging on a nearly new top-end.
