I was reading De Newz & one thing I've been avoiding doing for about a year now, is skydiving.

Not because I'm scared, not because I can't afford it (well, I can't for a couple months now Laughing ) but because I'm scared that once I get that buzz, once i'v experienced the awesome full on thrill of adrenaline I'd get from falling at 130mph at a cost of 300quid, it's over after 10 mintues or so.

What then? What else can I do to satisfy that urge, that constant hunger for the tiniest buzz. (mind i'd rather be an adrenialine junky than hooked on heroin or coke) - the last big buzz was running from the cops at 70 in a not so 70 listening to Disturbia by Rihanna; check the tune out..) and I don't wanna lose my license long term.

No, I discovered on the news the publicity about the BASE jumpers.
This, got me thinking... when I saw XXX and Diesel jumped off the car, I thought it was pretty fucking cool, I htough one day I'd love to try that.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1241637/Sky-diver-set-new-world-record-base-jumping-2-205ft-Burj-Khalifa-Dubai.html

Now, Quacker boy is there abouts, and iirc a couple of the forum lads have done a skydive? Anyone know if I can learn up on this, get the gear and go for it?

As a side note, what's BCF's wierd and wonderfull hobbies? Cool

Once you get yer level 8 IIRC and get your own parachute, you only need to pay airfare, and a repacking fee, which when I did me level 1 AFF was £18 or a set of 10 for £150. Least thats what it was at Langar, Clanger and Monkiepie used to be fully fledged skydivers.

However considering the phenominal cost of getting to level 8 about £1600 and £1-2K for a parachute and beyond I thought I could do other things with the money instead and I did (I went and did the big one instead).

Just had a look £1750 + £50 for any jump that you fail for AFF.

When I had a more money than sense I had helicopter lessons in a R22, loads of fun.

Almost no money and I moved onto gliders. £300 a year and about £10 for each flight.

My biggest thrill, which is also the most frightening and never to be done again was to go pillion with an instructor at Donnington. It cost me nothing but turned my hair grey.

I've done a day's paragliding and want to Hang Gliding. In it's self, compared to buy even a micro-light never mind a small plane, they're still very cheap.
I want to do it powered eventually, as it just seems less hassle - can take off from a lot more place and don't need to worry about thermals etc.

Oh and I believe you only get a minute's free fall on average. I've got the first day of an AFF course as a present - it's something I've always wanted to try, but suspect I won't find that amazing.

Oh and I thought the hard-core base jumpers went low, not high! Razz See nitro-circus for a lot of cool but a little silly base jumping exercises (ie two up on a motorcycle doing a back flip or something, etc.)
A lot of base jumping is illegal. Remember, you're still going to need someone to pick you up from the bottom, unless of course you get to the top under your own power.

I have only done a tandem jump, but it was brilliant,

Yes it totally eclipses motorbikes for an adrenalin hit, i was buzzing for the rest of the day and rode dangerously fast home from the skydive center in oxford.

The parachuting element of skydiving was an unexpectedly serene, very quiet you can hold a normal conversation.

While we were floating down my instructor asked me how skydiving compared to motorbkes i replied "Fuck bikes i see why you do this for a living"

I think you can do a tandem jump for about 200 quid, i reccommend it.

A mate of mine has bet me I won't do it by March, he only bet me because he knows when I do bet, I carry it out so I was goaded into it.

I plan to do it, I'm not losing 20quid and my rep Rolling Eyes Laughing

I was just scared what other extremes I'd be looking for once I had, and now I've looked into BASE Jumping it is appealing, but I think it'll be quite a while indeed before I'm shelling out for the equipment and all that comes with, assuming I could afford to in the next year or 3.

In honesty G, I'm not sure the idea of hang gliding is fast paced enough to give me a thrill, but I'm not 'off' the idea, just not sure it's 'there', 'extreme' enough.. Confused Smile

Maybe you should be a side car monkey, I remember asking about it when Mento was a side car monkey for a weekend. On your side of the pennines there are or were 2 clubs doing it.

https://www.solitude-memorial.de/03moto/49_56/53OliverNorton.JPG

Dunno about you but the road moving at high speed inches from my face seems a darned more dangerous than falling out the sky.

I weigh about 9 stone. That's not really much to try adding to a sidecar to keep at aground. Sad And falling out the sky I die if it goes wrong, not live to have my face ripped apart by said tarmac.

I was curious to see what other hobbies there are, since there's a good few hundred daily members. I'd get into stunting Sparks/Ciaran/Jake style but I don't have money readily available to pour into stunting a 600 up.

Therefore, inquisitive what others did; on the side.. Wink

I've done a tandem dive, bungy, jet boating etc and to be honest none of them gave me a buzz as such.
I felt no real thrill or sense of danger skydiving because you're so far away from ground you don't feel like you're going to hit it anyway. I came down, landed on my feet and walked away wondering what all the fuss is about.

Buy yourself a 350LC. At speed every corner become a lottery. Then you feel adrenaline. Thumbs Up

I did one jump in the 80s. 2500ft static line affair. My dad was a para and used to jump for sport after he left the army. I used to go up in the Cessna all the time as a kid at Lympne para club. I did the jump when I was 16 at Headcorn as it was a family tradition - but I'm never doing another one if I can help it Laughing

My hobbies are riding old shitters, tinkering with old shitters, talking cobblers about old shitters and bemoaning the decline of proper bikes in favour of these peculiar things they knock out these days.

I used to enjoy drinking too much and womanising, but age and circumstances have led me to knock these off my list of hobbies Confused

Sorry, yes, I doubt there's much 'buzz' in hang gliding unless you're swooping low over stuff, stunts etc. I found paragliding quite 'serene', but far from adrenaline inducing, apart from the first time when I managed to get a good few meters up - we were only

I've done sidecar monkeying and it's quite fun.
For cheap bike thrills, minimoto racing can be quite good (don't be put off they're small, do it well and you're going very fast, very close to the ground) and off roading, with off-road racing being very reasonably priced.
Ie £60 all in for 4 hours enduro 'racing', ride there and ride back if it's local. Flicking through a tight forest path with trees either side and low branches is fairly exciting even at 20-30mph or whatever.
However, for me I don't really get that 'adrenaline buzz' from much, unless say something almost goes wrong in bike racing (come out of a corner too wide and end up being very close to hitting the grass at speed whilst leant over, etc.)

I find I'm quite 'resistant' to adrenaline - while I got it the first few times I rode a fast bike, it soon wore off. Similarly for other general relatively 'extreme' activities; enjoy doing them, but don't get a massive 'buzz', unless something goes wrong anyway!

Can't do Mini-Moto-ing, I can ride the things but it's when I get the 6y/o's whizzing past me and intimidating me I get fuxed off. Laughing

I really love Go karting, and often rally round my lcoal track but it's the same old.

I was expecting some wise old beans to put pics of model airplanes/bikes they've built or something (due to thread title) Laughing

As it stands, it doesn't have to be ground-initiated sports but it has to be 'daring', I don't much of a buzz from Go-Karting but when I take a corner wrong, or just scrape past someone (verging on an accident) I get a kick, fook me if I see a lorry coming down a road fast I've been known to stroll across said road just before it get's to me purely to have it just miss me, i know it'd be messy if one day I mis-judged it and not very pleasent for the lorry driver/police etc but I literally can't control myself when it comes to getting the fix.

Meh, I'm off to watch Nip/Tuck. Thumbs Up

I restore, sell, keep and swap vintage streetlights and streetlight bulbs. My latest items are 2 of the old tunnel floodlights from under the A638 at J38 of the A1.

They both work and currently one is for sale or swap.

I've also started to get involved in the world of bus preservation which is interesting. Filmed the first startup in 2 years of another bus too, which was rather smokey as the alternator was seized. Youtube MrStelmer.

After a small taste of driving a Leyland Olympian I want my PCV licence.....

It is a 1985 Leyland Olympian restored in original Yorkshire Rider livery and I just drove it a short distance round a corner on a farm in the Midlands. Interesting though i'd prefer a clutch pedal as automatic is strange......

Videos of the bus are on my youtube channel though I forgot to get the owner to video me driving it.

I can tell you it is expensive.

PCV license which apparently is hard, expensive and you have to be retested every 5 years.

Storage for your bus.

Time to maintain your bus as it is a passenger carrying vehicle and needs to be safe. They deteriorate rapidly when stood.

There's other things too...

I'll check it out, as a random side note - with 'that other thread' by WTD, I done a personality thingy, it says I'm an " E S T J" - E being Extrovert.

Does this mean I'm 'programmed' to want the buzz's?

I saw the guys practicing the jump pretty much everyday before the opening, bloody scary shit, jumping off an 828m high building...i'd much rather fancy my chances of jumping out of a plane to be honest!

I'm a SCUBA diver, which is sort of at the opposite end of the "adrenaline rush" scale. It's incredibly sedate and very relaxing to be flaoting around in an element we're not supposed to occupy. I find the entire time I'm underwater I'm on a high and when you've got all manner of sea creatures trying to bite, pinch and sting you, it gets pretty exciting!

stelmer wrote:

It's no harder than any other test. Once you've figured out how to get the thing round corners, the rest comes naturally.

And you don't have to retest every five years... The five years thing is for the CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence), which is all about your ability to operate a bus in service (customer care, steady driving etc). It looks a lot like a drivers licence, except it's a blue photocard instead of pink and it's a legal requirement that you have to carry it at all times when in service. You need 35 hours of coaching over 5 years to keep your CPC current, so most places just do one (7 hour) day training a year. As far as I know, you only need the CPC if you are going to be driving the bus in service.

You'll have to ask people with full tickets

nah each of the levels you have to perform a certain task, the first few levels you have two instructors holding onto your hip, IIRC the first task is to reach backwards to a dummy parachute pull cord 3 times, after the first few levels it gets reduced to one instructor then you have to perform 360s, spins loops etc.

EU laws these days probably mean one of those uber expensive devices called a cypress which opens your chute automatically means that its rather harder to die than normal.
