Are they any good? Will I be dissapointed after owning a CRM250?

The one above is 97 model on ebay at the mo, it finnishes in a few hours and is only round the corner.

Worth a punt or hold out for a XR400R?

I had a XR250 as my first offroader and for that it was perfect to learn on. I moved onto the XR400 and preferred it in all areas - it was better on the road and better offroad. The 400 has pretty much the same weight but much better power - the 250 was up and down the gearbox all the time trying to find some power. The 400 was also much better on the road.

However, I think coming from the CRM you might find them heavy and slow, especially the 250.

I run two of them. One is a XR250L 1996 (electric start) other is my girlfriends XR250R 1999.

Plus.
Easy to use
Good MPG
Cheap/common spares
Easy to service
Lots of aftermarket support (using talon lower link for Stephs bike)

Cons
Nothing like riding a modern enduro bike (suspension etc)
Lacks abit of go on the road or open offroad bits
Most are kick start only (hard to find electric start ones)

A good all rounder. XR400R might of been a better choice for me but came across an XR250 for myself cheap.

They dont like water and can be a bi*ch to start when dropped/binned.

Great as a starter bike ... but not if you already have off road experience.

Im having a bit of trouble finding another bike at the mo, im wanting another 2 stroke but can't find anything in budget thats not 100+ miles away

I have had a go on both your old CRM and Klause's XR. Klause has proved it will go up anything, through anything, under anything and bego for more!! Thumbs Up

.... but I think you will be disappointed with the power on the XR250 - or lack thereof. I have had a go on Sparks! 400 (440?) and it is an excellent engine, bags of low down grunt.

The 250 is a bit less to muscle around, but the 400 is so sure footed and confidence inspiring (helps you know the engine will get you out of any trouble) I am not sure its extra mass is a problem?

I love my XR440, it does everything and has taught me well, theres nothing the BIKE won't go up through or over.. it's mostly down to the riders inabilities if anything.

As for the weight, it's a lot different to your CRM, but it's not majorly bad.. I have no real problems picking it up and since blue and myself fixed the auto decomp its not been a problem to start.

I rode Stephs XR250 up the steps before it was flattened and was quite suprised with it, rides a lot smoother than my 440, the engine is sedate BUT useable and it got me up the hill.... have only ridden it briefly so can't say any more than that.

I think you'd find the 250 a bit tame compared to your CRM so maybe consider the 400 Smile
