sorry guys but this is a car question. Mr. Green
Having a debate at work, when braking in the snow and you start to skid, do you pump the brakes or do you press harder and let the ABS do its thing?

I said press harder because you have ABS.

right or wrong?

I've found that by the time you start to skid, the ABS is vibrating away anyway. That's in a SEAT Alhabmbra and a VW Golf - I don't have to press hard to "activate" ABS.

Just press hard and the ABS will do all the pumping for you! Laughing

In snow it won't make any difference, you'll still slide to the bottom of the hill and hit something unless you've already paid your 'Sod's Law' tax in full... Wink

abs in snow is useless, i find pumping the brake , keeping the front rolling, will always be better and give you better traction. ABS pulses far too quickly for snow.

You reach for the ABS button and turn it off. In deep snow locking the wheels is better.

its pretty much the same response here at the office, half of us think push the brake pedal as hard as you can and let the ABS do its job, the others think locking up the wheels is best ?! Doh!

Better to avoid locking them up and needing ABS in the first place, maybe? Take it easy.

Maybe depends on the cars implementation of ABS and the traction/tyres available..

In mine (MK7 Fiesta) it royally sucks and cannot be turned off. The only real way of stopping has been engine braking in low gears and reading the road ahead very carefully and keeping the pace down..

Options at the moment, I'd prefer it sliding rather than ABS kicking in.

My 'logic' behind this is that some of the road will have grip (most wont), with the ABS constantly pulsing, your more likely to miss that little bit of grip that may be available on the road. Also, in snow, it will start building a little snowman/trench that will eventually help stop you.

Previously, I've had two vehicle with 4wd/awd and would certainly prefer that right now.
