Evening all,

Ok so first a little history.

It seems that if I leave my high-beam on whilst the bike is off overnight, it will cause me to have to bump start the bike in the morning, why this occurs I do not know, but each time it has happened I have successfully managed to get her running again by bump starting it.

Over the weekend, however, this happened again, and the icey conditions meant I was not able to try to bump start it. I tried to today, and after many attempts have been unsuccessful.

My missus' dad had a 12v battery that had a voltage of 12.4 without a load going across it, and connecting this up and then trying to start it made the engine begin to turnover, but it never quite got there.

The voltage across the bike battery gave a reading of 8.5 - I believe that a combination of the cold weather and the fact that it had drained overnight made it this low.

Can the battery be saved by charging it or is it knackered?

Even if it is knackered, I'm curious as to whether buying a new battery will solve the problem since I could not even get it to bump start?

Could there be other causes at hand?

Cheers,

GhostRider

Urm, you flattened your battery twice and now if you leave it on charge over night it wont start again during the day after use or not putting back on charge?

Yep i'd say its a battery related problem if all of your fuses and wiring is in check.

I don't possess a battery charger so haven't attempted to recharge it, I was more wondering if it's worth bothering buying one to attempt to recharge it or whether the battery will be utterly shagged now and I'll ha e to get a new one, I'd rather not buy a charger to find it's useless anyway then fork out for a battery anyway, moneys tight Smile

back on, started on the button, headed back home and next day the bike started perfect, just needs a good kick up the arse when its flat Razz

yeah I've had to bump start it about 4 or 5 times now over the space of about 3 months and it has always been fine afterwards until ivemade the mistake of leaving the highbeam switched on again but it just will not bump start this time, which is what prompted me to think there was maybe an additional issue at hand.

Scrounge a battery charger off a mate and charge it, if that fails buy a new battery and remember to turn the light switch off .

I used to have to bump start my Hornet due to a dodgy battery and it would bump start every day till one day it wouldn't do it any more.

Turns out that whilst I was pushing the thing to get a decent amount of speed (no hills where I used to live) I'd accidentally pressed the rather large kill switch. Can you imagine how long that took to figure out.

Have you done the same?

Lol I've never witnessed that, it's a piece of piss ain't it? Run with the thing in second gear, jump on it and as you land on the seat drop the clutch and rev a little. Works for me anyway. What I was wondering is why second gear though?

1st gear has too much resistance.

At least that's what I assume.

That and probably if you do start it and rev it you might flip it accidentally. Laughing

So in theory you could bump a bike in first? Would it be easier, just higher risk? And I cant see my GS producing too much power haha, power is not it's middle name. Shit heap is.

Well just think, first gear is really high.

When down-changing and engine braking 1st is always much stronger than 2nd.

I don't think it'd be easier. Theres more resistance to actually turning the engine...

Unless it's a hot day with a LOT of traction on the tarmac you're trying to bump start your bike on I wouldn't use 1st. Use 2nd or 3rd and it's a whole lot easier to bump start the bike. Alternatively, find a hill.

I think this also depends on if you are trying to start it by sitting on it or not because there is weight on the back wheel to keep it from just locking up immediately.

My way is to knock into 2nd. Choke one if cold. Then run along side with clutch in then jump onto the seat and dump the clutch in one fluid motion. Works 98% of the time.

Thumbs Up

I'm not athletic enough to jump on at speed. I have to find a hill Very Happy

To the OP, if your battery has dropped to 8 volts I'd say it's beyond rescue. A good set of jump leads from a healthy battery should get it going but if it won't hold charge, replace it.
