From my other thread about selling my truck.. if I do decide to sell it I may end up getting a cheaper car , preferably around £1000 but maybe £2000 depending..

So, I don't really know much about car prices... what sort of thing am I looking at?

Must have 4/5 seats and be fairly reliable, preferably something that looks nice though! Seen 2000 facelift model VW Golfs for £2000 but most have 100k + miles..

suggestions?

I'd go with a Mk4 Golf, heard the 1.4's are horrible so the 1.6 would probably be your best bet. Avoid a GTI unless it's the turbo version as they really are slow.

VW Passat
VW Bora
Audi A4
Audi A6
BMW E39 5 SERIES
BMW E36 3 SERIES
Ford Focus

I think all the above look nice & are fairly modern inside & out bar probably the 3 series. The VW's & Audi's have really nice interior very ambient & cosy. Smile

Any other requirements at all to narrow it down?

How about a comfo barge estate lugger with horses to pull itself along? (Good looking? Hmm...)
https://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1403385.htm

Chav me up? Still, practical and fast (still not hitting the good looks admittedly)
https://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1422820.htm

Nice and reliable, reasonable looking, not quite as practical?
https://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1208387.htm

Reliable 6 pot banger with alright ish looks?
https://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1426935.htm

Love it or hate it styling - some would question reliable but they were in my experience:
https://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1250495.htm

Loads and loads of choice at that level matey Smile

Not really that I can think of. I don't mind TDI's or petrol, must be manual... erm.. not much else really to round it down... I'd prefer a smaller hatchback but I'm not limited to that..

Really like the MK4 Golfs.. just most for £2000 range have high mileage. Bora's are nice too but again not much for £2000..

Been browsing ebay since posting this thread and decided that I don't really like cheap cars Laughing so far they all look a bit bland and crappy...will have a look on piston heads now..

That Imprezza is winning so far, but isnt £1500 quite cheap for a scooby? Also I'd prefer something that wasn't ridiculous on insurance.

Mk3/4 Golfs. Horrible, horrible cars. Why they have this great following, I'll never know. Thumbs Down

Just keep an eye out, theres plenty of Golfs about, my MK4 had 125,000 miles when i bought her & it ran like new, don't let it put you off. Really was a great car (just not fast lol)
Know nothing about Subaru's but if you can get one for around £1,500 then go for it, as long as you're prepared for the fel bills. Shocked

If you didn't need the extra 2/3 seats i'd of definitely said an MR2. Smile

I always wanted an MR2 when I was young Laughing thing is, seeing as my other vehicle is a van with just 3 seats I'd prefer to have something marginally practical, I rarely take more than 1 person but I don't really want something where I definetly can't take more than 1 person.

FTO's have 4 seats but fuck knows how an adult fits in the back, and apparantly they aren't all that well rated cars.. I like the look of them though.

MR2's are very fun cars but i don't think you can even fit a suitcase in one. The boot has more depth then it is wide so no good for anything long.

I was going to go for an FTO before the MR2 (made a thread on BCF) but 99% of the posts told me to go for the MR2.
FTO's look great but nearly everywhere you ask (apart from the FTO forum) doesn't have anything good to say about them. Pretty sure they're all imports too so insurance will be quite expensive.

Another Hatchback, very similar to the Mk4 Golf. Never really liked the look of the A3's but they seem like decent cars.
https://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1368609.htm

Do you mind about speed? Or do you just want an allround good car?

Quite like that A3.. don't normally like them but it doesn't look too shabby really.

As for speed, I'm used to vans and my truck which gets too expensive over 70mph Laughing so I'm not a massive speed freak in the car, when I had a 306 I used to drive it around a bit too fast so I'm not massively bothered if it's not the fastest car in the world, but don't want something stupidly slow.

Got me thinking, the 98 facelift 306 I had was a great car and that only cost me £1800 back in 06

I've been having the same dilemma as you recently, was looking at coupes like the MR2 and FTO, Insurance for FTO is ridiculous, for some weird reason its group 20... I was really wanting an MR2 originally but i needed more than 2 seats. Looked at golfs for round about 2k, you can get a mk4 with around 70-90K and FSH for that price. 98> Celicas seemed pretty reasonable too few going near me for aroun 1500-2000 mark, 75k. Was interested in audis but few people advised me against saying whilst they are very good cars, parts are expensive. Also looked at Civics, but there hardly seemed to be any hatchbacks near me and i didnt like the styling of the saloon models. In the end found a 02 Mazda 323F Sport 2.0 Facelift model. 77k top spec with alloys, A\C and traction control. Pretty perky motor and not missed a beat in the recent crap weather. That set me back around 2k

not mine but same colour and model

I was looking for a car in this price range just before christmas and like you found most cars old, ugly, high milage or buckets of shit.

In the end i found this little gem:

https://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs239.snc3/22636_242216092405_508842405_3387872_6646284_n.jpg

Its the Abarth so its got the 2.4 ltr petrol engine which i generally get 28-32mpg with town driving etc.

Comes with pretty much everything - Sat nav, phone, selespeed semi auto box, cruise, auto lights, auto wipers, elec windows and mirrors, auto climate control, computer, air conditioned drink box Shocked etc etc...

On a 03 plate, FSH, 65k miles for £1950.

Theres obviously smaller engines and diesels available but none look as nice Razz 5 doors are fairly ugly. Some come with leather and heated seats which is nice...

Insurance is around £600 FC with my mrs main driver being 25 and me being 21.

Pics may not work as they are on my Facebook...

You got that for £2000? Shocked looks quite funky and looks like its worth way more than that.

WTF is it though?

edit..

I see, Fiat Stilo Abarth..

quite a few on ebay around £2.5k - £3k mark..

They are rather nice looking and have all the gadgets and toys..

but its a Fiat, so what are they really like? reliable? toys actually work? fast? etc etc

also, whats the deal with the semi automatic-ness??

The woman has a 1.6 stilo. I wouldn't get one.

Pretty, and fair handling, but that's about it. Very high geared, poor reliability.

Its ok, feels ok inside - No rattles or anything. Only had it a couple of months so cant say much but the airbag warning light has just came on but that could just be a loose connection (fingers crossed).

Aparently has about 170bhp, so not as fast as scoobys etc with a 0-60 is about 8 seconds which is fairly slow but fast enough for everyday driving.

The gearbox takes a bit of getting used to, has flappy paddle and the sequencial leaver which is the one i normally use. Gets annoying if you slow for a mini roundabout and it decides to change you to 2nd from 4th (because it thinks you might be slowing to a stop) when your just starting to accelerate so you launch back in the seat. Other than that it may or may not be quicker than a normal box but it has its uses.

Everything inside works a treat, had a brake light bulb that needed replacing - told me which one was out which was nice.

At 70 it sits around the 3k mark i think maybe just under and its not too bad on wind noise. Probbably more refined on most roads than any car ive owned before (Astra SRI, various 206's, Rover Turbo Coupe, Vitara soft top Laughing , Freelander, Even a 07 plate Golf i had the 'pleasure' of driving)

Sounds awsome though and pretty much no one knows what it actually is Laughing

Its a 5 cylinder 20 valve if that makes any difference for you.

Only cars i would swap it for is a nice big Range Rover or a 5 series BMW with Msport goodies. Both a fair bit more than this!

Hope this helps. May actually be selling it soon due to money problems Sad

Hell, for a grand I'd sell you my car. Mk 3 Golf, 1995 registration, a fair few miles on the clock...but I doubt you'd want to pay that kind of money for a M plate.

'02 Saab 9-3's can be had for that money with like 60-80k miles and have some money to put towards insurance.

Reliable, comfy, fast, hatchback, 5 seat, sub £2k, good looking... what more do you want?

I was talking to a friend about this car after you posted and he seems to think that tax band is due to go up to £400 a year!

That's only for cars made after March 2006, when they started introducing the 'gas guzzler' tax bands. Cars made before that date will remain at £210 or thereabouts.

Ooo I see! Well, for now I'm not sure if I'm going to buy another car, but if I do I think I want one of these Stilos.. need to get a test drive/closer look soon but they certainly look pretty good for the money, not expecting amazingness but better than some stuff you can get for £2k!

If you buy a stilo, make sure you buy a multimeter and some spare oil pressure.

Mate of mine had a Stilo, it was a very well kept car, he still can't work out why the engine randomly decided to eat itself the one day at 70 on the motorway with the kids in the back...

I had the same sort of problem a while back, wasnt sure what to get. I think i posted something on here actually.
I ended up getting a 1.4 Honda Civic. Dont regret a thing. Love it, it is all you will need from a car. The rest is for the bike.
