Austrailian Cattle dogs

I've NEVER seen one in the UK, does anyone own or know someone who owns one? The only time i've ever seen one is in the movie Mad Max & Youtube since then & ever since then i've wanted one as i think their absolutely gorgeous! Not too big & not too small & seems like just the type of dog i want as it needs loads of exercise.
I've had a read a bit about them but wondered if anyone has first hand experience?

If you can easily get puppies in the UK i'll definitely be getting one.

the force looks strong in that one.

ive heard their temperement can be quite bad ibut ive never seen one in the flesh.

not the most attractive breed IMO.

Yeah, i can see why people wouldn't like them but i can also see why people would. I was also thinking of a Bulldog so looks aren't everything to me.

They seem to be very trainable from some of the clips i've seen but not good around kids they don't know.

Nice looking dogs indeed, i've met one, it tried to bite me a few times, it also suceeded in savaging my girlfriends finger.

Nice as pie one minute, then for no apparent reason a snap change and violence. Could be due to the fact it was a rescue dog as much as any breed traits.

After biting one person too many it was got rid of. It belonged to the owner of a horse yard near here.

Just had a scout around and doesnt seem to be many breeders in the uk but found this one on champdogs.

Theyre pig ugly to be honest but each to their own.You might want to do some research into their "drive" because, from what ive just read, they could turn out to be quite a strange and demanding choice of pet. (theyre basically a cross breed from a collie and a dingo)
Cheap to buy though and you`ll definately stand out in the crowd owning one of those.

Nice dogs for rounding up cattle.

Trouble is, how does a 20kg dog herd a 750kg cow?

It bites it.

Herein lies the problem. It is a dog that has primarily been bred to make cows do what it wants by biting their noses and heels (hard).

Similar behaviour is not considered acceptable in a house.

Rough summary of the breed: They are too clever for their own good, they bite, they require high levels of constant exercise, they are superb escape artists, they are intolerant of other dogs and will fight with them at any oppertunity, if bored they will set about destroying anything in their general vicinity.

So. If you want a good dog to round up your cattle, look no further. If you want a pet, this is not the dog you are looking for.

Thanks everyone for the help. Stinkwheel, never knew that, very interesting! I'm not set out to buying a dog just yet so gives me plenty of time to research & i will bear that in mind.

Cattle dogs are cool I love the fact that the colour of some of them is blue



If you want friendly and good tempered get a lurcher, really mild mannered dogs.

I've owned a red and a blue in my years but I think nearly every Aussie has either had one or at least a cross in their time.

In regards to temperament, they are very intelligent, agile and energetic. All of these things mean that they require someone who will spend time with them both exercising them and training them.
I've not found them to be viscous by any means unless ill treated or trained to do so.
As said they are very loyal and you will find out how much so if you try to put your hand into the car they are sitting in or on.



Whilst I think they are great dogs and are very hearty, i would not recommend one to anybody who can not spend sufficient time with them.
Remember they are a cattle dog, bred to chase cattle. So if you're not using them for this purpose then you best have a suitable alternative to keep them busy.
If not you may very well find them digging, chasing anything that moves or making good their escape to find something more interesting.
