PostPosted: 16:58 - 18 Jan 2010    Post subject: paramedic training Reply with quote

My mrs has wanted to be a paramedic for years and recently has decided that she would really like to go for a career change while she is still relatively young.
She has asked me if I could look on the internet and see if I can find out anything about it.
For example, what prerequisite qualifications are required, what training do you then need and what options are there for doing this.
If anybody knows anything about this and can offer any advice or information we would be grateful

Thanks Thumbs Up

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

OK to be a paramedic you need a Clean, Full Manual C1 Category license. GCSES and a basic science knowlege, nothing drastic at this stage, just enough to be able to understand the first few lectures.

Ok there are 3 ways into becoming a paramedic
  • University course lasting 3/4 years (Foundation/BSc Hons)
  • Student Ambulance Paramedic Course run by the local Ambulance trust
  • Progression through Patient Transport Services -> Ambulance Technician (me) -> Paramedic

Each pathway has its Pros and Cons..

Any more info needed send me a PM

I presume you went for that one?

I've always toyed with the idea but thought you'd have to have a degree in something or other.

Do they give you all the training etc. if you go for the option above?

Im actually an Anomaly! I started the Uni course on my way to a foundation degree... then a load of shit kicked off cos of the words seizure being bandied around in response to me.. so i spoke to my boss in the ambulance service who assessed me as a Patient Transport Driver... and then onto a level 2 ambulance technician.

All training is provided, though the assignments are tough as and its a 12 week block of lectures with a year out on the road afterwards.

And because of this new agenda for change malarky, all health professionals are now being pushed into having a degree, starting with nurses... but at least they get funding for it!

Well AFC has been around for 5 or 6 years now so hardly new, and most health professions have already been degree educated for ages (physio's, OTs, speech therapists, pharmacists). In fact nurses are pretty much the last healthcare profession to get mandatory degree training rather than the first. Thumbs Up

Love it, as soon as your missus asks you to look up the internet you role in the help from BCF. Laughing Laughing Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Good luck with her new career, I have nothing else to add to this thread on the account I know nothing about paramedics except they like a bit of humour when you're in the back of an ambulance. Laughing

Was a better experience (other than them cutting up my only work shirt!) than I expected. Asked how I was feeling as I was in and out of conciousness, I just said.

"Great thanks, yourself?"

He replied with

"Yeah it's a nice day too."

Was good laugh on the way. Thumbs Up

Depending on your region, the "hands on" training courses to go from EMT (Ambulance Technician) to Paramedic might not be available.

My brother is an EMT and his local service has changed the course to a on-line biased training.

Also, if you passed your test after the mid 1990's you might not have C1 entitlement, meaning another driving test.

You will also have to pass a CRB Police check.

Knew i have forgot something... though the trust pays the expenses for that...

Im aware of the closure of routes from EMT to paramedic... im just hoping i can take my Tech 3 Exams before they shut the door on that aswell!

Several trusts don't have their own route in via a student paramedic scheme and since the job progression route is gone now (PTS-EMT-Paramedic) you have to go through university instead if you want to do it. They are restarting their own schemes though in several areas. West Midlands recently started one for the first time and will take people without any nursing or PTS/Technician experience, they do however want some reasonable care experience of some kind, you're also tied into a 5 year contract with the trust, which is reasonable really. East Midlands were recruiting for students too recently.

The C1 licence isn't necessary to apply, only the provisional is, but it's down to you to train and pass the test sometimes as the trust won't always pay but some do. They do require 2 years driving experience though as you'll be trained on blue lights almost immediately so you need to be a reasonably competant driver. The fitness test can actually be quite hard as your pass/fail is based on heart rate variation and not ability to complete it so genuine fitness is required but again it varies between trusts apparently, just aslong as she's not chronically obese probably be fine.

This is all well and good, but where does one actually start looking for vacancies in these positions? (if anyone links to google I will rape your mothers mouth).

I ask because I know my sister-in-law has always been interested in this and is looking for a career change.

Cheers,

You'll notice I said it varies between trusts and "apparently". On my interview day I was talking to several people who had applied previously to other trusts and were talking about the fitness tests, specificially one involved carrying a weighted dummy (60kilos odd) up and down a flight of stairs, heart rate was monitored before and after and if it went too high or didn't return to resting quickly enough then they failed despite completing the task. I'm well aware there are some gigantic paramedics and coppers wobbling around but fat people can be fit believe it or not, again I point out the fact the test is not universal. A reasonably good level of fitness would be expected though.

Positions will be on NHS careers website, otherwise it's applying to universities via UCAS as with any other degree.
