Quite simply, I'm in Hong Kong for a bit of side business and no I'm not smuggling drugs and nor am I an assassin either.

But I'm out here and a job interview has turned up in the UK smell the irony, thing is I'm not sure the job is genuine, in that I was sent a canned email reply back on application. I know it was canned as my CV was unread as it made general references rather than specific.

I can't think of a way to ask them if the job is genuine without insinuating that they are liars.

Quite simply on many jobs websites there are many fake CV harvesting jobs the same old jobs appear you apply for them they set an interview date and as if by magic these jobs are withdrawn.

My past experience is pretty bad in this regard, I once travelled to Penzance from Manchester then to Edinburgh for non existent jobs which meant the NTV was battered to hell and I spent over £200 on petrol for no gain.

I obviously don't want to fly back and be told the job does not exist and the only way I can see about getting them some form of violence if my suspicions are confirmed.

What would you do? , insist on travel expenses? an immediate flight home is £3200 I am most definately not absorbing that out of me own pocket.

What say you BCF

Thanks

Get in contact with someone and talk to them about the job—just general questions, like what the role entails, a bit of background on the company, etc...
Should be able to suss out relatively easily whether it's a scam or not, most of the people posting fake job apps really won't run too far with it.

This. Respond with some interview-style questions about the job (the kind you'd ask when you're getting interviewed, not they ones they ask you!) and engage in some meaningful conversation. This way you'll be able to figure out how much the person on the other end knows about the job they're offering, and as a result if it's genuine or not.
I would not be forking out a penny until I was sure.

Bare in mind a lot of companies have already filled vacancies internally, they only advertise them externally because they have to ( fair policy and all that jazz ) and the fact you're already suspicious about the advertised vacancy and the reply you got I'd be inclined to leave it if you're not close enough to attend...

But on the other hand it may be a genuine placement so it's worth calling them to either set your mind at rest either way, seeing as you don't want to ask outright, you're going to have to go with gut instinct and either add to or allay your suspicions and go from there...

I've had the same shit happen to me three times now, albeit not that kind of distance and cost but when you're a doley petrol tokens are scarce...

Can you ask for a phone interview, bearing in mind you're in HK?

It's much easier to get a job as a cute girl than an ugly bloke, so that's his interview face.
