Hi! i`ve been into bikes a long time now and have had my share of different machinery.
i`ve one or two quick bikes in my limited career as a biker such as race tuned Bultaco Pursangs, race tuned LC, and i now have a ZX6R.
but getting them done profesionally or buying them was very expensive but no challenge.

so now i am looking at doing my own and easy tuning on a shoestring buget.
and this got me thinking off all the small bikes out there that may be suitable?
so what tune up bits are out there and for what bikes?
does anybody know of any tune up tips for the Honda CG engine?
i know they can be tuned as i have seen them in junior Grass-Track bikes, and they whizzed along at a right old lick Razz

dont say buy a bigger faster bike as that defeats the object!

the sort of bikes i am thinking of would be 250cc or less and single cylinder.
Either 2 or 4 stroke

come on folks give me some pointers Cool please

well the obvious is a 2 stroke,
as real tuning on a 4 stoke on a shoestring budget is an oxymoron

as to what bike, well 250cc 2stroke singles are almost all limited to dirt bikes,

so a smokey supermoto project sounds like the best idea given your criteria

get the book by A.G.Bell performance tuning in theory and practice (four strokes) and read it many, many times.

for tuning two strokes the books by Gordon Jennings Thumbs Up And A.G.Bell are the must haves.

If you search the net you will find them on some of the race\tuning forums. as downloadable pdf files.

Don`t just search for engine tuning I did that once and found loads of fake virus programs attacking my pc

thank you for replies folks...

firstly.. tuning a 4-stroke? ... could a way of improving a Honda CG engine be as simple as rejetting the carb? or putting a different carb on?
are there aftermarket exhausts out there, that might let the little engine breathe a bit better?
i dont think i will go down the route of trying to put bigger valves in a CG Shocked as i think that would be more trouble than it`s worth.

Buying an MZ Smile i did think about this and there is loads of stuff out there to upgrade your MZ.
Have you seen the price of some off that stuff Shocked the tune up bits would cost more than the bike Smile
having a zippy MZ does have some appeal though Smile

i will be looking out for those books over the next few weeks and thank you for the suggestions.... the ones by A.G. Bell are first on my list.
thanks for the tip about viruses

For parts out of the shop for the cg, all you can really get is a free flow air filter, carb rejet and a sprocket set to alter your gearing. If you want to go further, you're looking at some major cash. But here are some things you could do.
Lighten the valvetrain with some lighter yet stronger pushrods.
If you must, you could cut and weld your own piping and weld a sports can on the end of your home made header,
Having your head p&p will increase gas flow.
Skim your head to increase compression ratio, but you will have to run higher octane fuel to prevent detonation Smile

i like the sound of a free-flow air filter and a carb re-jet (i think that even i could manage that one)
i`ve been experimenting with welding some pipes so maybe the CG will end up with a shorter/stubbier exhaust Smile
when you say higher octane fuel do you mean premium/super at the pumps?? rather than standard?.

why is it that tune up parts for small 4-strokes are so rare??
with bike makers are going the way they are, there will be very few 2-strokes left.
with no 2-strokes left, surely people will want to tune thier 4-strokes???

because tuning a 4 stroke is expensive, and requires you to change cams, valves, barrels, as well as exhausts ect

where with just basic tools, you can easily get a few hp just by increasing compression, polishing and porting the head, and for free!
spend just a little amount of money and you can buy a decent expansion chamber, coulped with previous mods you can easily get over 10hp,

so in short for 30 or 40 quid you can get 10 hp on a smokey

it would cost you thousands to get an extra 10hp out of a 4t single 250cc

2 stroke is really your only option if you are on a "shoestring budget"

anything else and your just dreaming

when did they decide to make a rs250 a single cylinder???
and tuning a rs250 is costly, its already in a high state of tune,

i think a mz etz 250 is the way forward, they are cheep simple, and there are loads of spares and tuning parts available
