By my reckoning we are about 500 years behind where we should be in our understanding of science and technology that can be directly attributed to Christianity.

The Bishop and whatsherpus got seriously gubbed in that debate.

They started with around 650 odd in there favour (over 1000 against mind, and 340 odd undecided.)

At the end, they only had 200 odd votes in favour and about 850 against. I felt sorry for the Bishop because I think his heart is probably in the right place. As for that Widdecombe skank, holier than though pious claptrap for which I have no time what so ever.

Thumbs Up

Yeah? Funny that Isaac Newton, for one, was massively religious.
How far behind d'you think we'd be without his input?

I'd Imagine he was referring to the dark ages which generally refers to the 10th century through to the 15th century. Isaac Newton wasn't born until the 1600's, thus the exploration of science was no longer thought of as witchcraft and wouldn't get you on that nights BBQ roast.

IS this the same Catholic church that vehemently opposes contraception and abortion?

Just what we need in a world with an over-population and AIDS epidemic. Thumbs Up

Apparently, Isaac Newton was a Heretic who never really discussed his religious views. He was however an accomplished Theologian.

Also, (apparently) it could have been, that in order for him to be taken seriously, he needed to allude to some form of religious belief. According to the debate above Stephen Fry pointed out that you couldn't go to university unless you had a specific religion (can't remember what it was, Anglican possibly.)

Even now religious concerns are scuppering possibly ground breaking experimentation in human cloning... Me me me!!

Religion was still fucking things up for science in the 17th century.

Quote:
Galileo has been called the "father of modern observational astronomy,"[6] the "father of modern physics,"[7] the "father of science,"[7] and "the Father of Modern Science."[8] Stephen Hawking says, "Galileo, perhaps more than any other single person, was responsible for the birth of modern science."[9]

After 1610, when he began publicly supporting the heliocentric view, which placed the Sun at the centre of the universe, he met with bitter opposition from some philosophers and clerics, and two of the latter eventually denounced him to the Roman Inquisition early in 1615. Although he was cleared of any offence at that time, the Catholic Church nevertheless condemned heliocentrism as "false and contrary to Scripture" in February 1616,[10] and Galileo was warned to abandon his support for it—which he promised to do. When he later defended his views in his most famous work, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, published in 1632, he was tried by the Inquisition, found "vehemently suspect of heresy," forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

Religious views held back darwin from publishing until he lost his faith. Einstien was also religious and believed god had a plan and that things should be predictable causing him to reject quantum mechanics as it had too great an element of unpredictability and this didn't fit in with what he saw as god's plan. So thats the greatest scientific mind ever, turned against sciences biggest puzzle by religion.[/quote]
