woman knocked over my bike

can't decide whether i'm really f*^ked off or a bit grateful i have been on the road for just two days with my 2002 honda nsr and came out this afternoon to find it lying on the floor like a dead cow. fairing is broken and mirror scratched and bent. A lady driving a car decided to use my bike as extra space to park her car however i restrained myself from decapitating a nearby big issue seller with my bent mirror as i found a note with said lady's name and real phone number rather than the usual note saying 'sorry i have no insurance' or the one i found on my car last year, 'i am writing this note because people are watching' i am now wondering whether to let her insurance take the hit or repay her kindness by sourcing the parts for her at a reasonable price and not hit her up for the minor scratches on the lower fairing, which as its my first bike could be added to at any moment!

If it were me i'd get the bits off ebay and charge her that and no more. I think in 90% of the cases where bikes get knocked over they just drive off as quickly as they can. My mates mum drove into his bike, she picked it up and pretended no knowledge of it. And that was his mum!

I know accidents happen and it IS nice she left a note and all but it is the least she can do.
She damaged your property, she should fix it.
No reason you should have a bike with scratches on it that you didn't put there just because she left you a note.

Yes most wouldn't do you this common coutersy but that doesn't mean you don't have the right to get it fixed properly.

Maybe next time she will keep a better eye out for the next bike.

I would go somewhere in the middle of the above. I would price up parts on ebay AND add on a reasonable sum for my time to repair. Also maybe she would rather go through the insurance than pay direct??

If the damage is minor l would just give her a quote from honda for the new parts l did this a few years ago when "Ten minute sue" the local chinese take away owner reversed around a conner into my parked VFR750, was not worth taking it through the isurance as the bike would of been wrote off and her premuims would of been hit hard, l think it came to £200 in all for a new top fairing and mirror.

Get two quotes sorted... One from an insurance approved repair centre and one for getting parts off flea-bay etc & DIY repairs. Ring her up and give her a choice. If she's skint she may want to go through insurance as she hasn't got the cash... If she's got a couple of quid, she may want to save her no-claims bonus.

i remember years ago my step mum going nuts as a car reversed into her car and cracked the headlights then drove off sharpish. my dad got an absolute bollocking afterwards (he was the the driver)

If she's willing to pay to settle privately then you'll get your bike fixed much faster and with a lot less hassle then would be involved by going through insurance.

Just ask her if she wants to go through insurance or if she's happy to settle it privately if you find out prices for the parts and you'll fit them yourself.

Had a mate a few years ago in a situation like that, the woman was fine and was willing to pay, however, when he got the prices her husband got involved. He was a total arse and decided his wife had done nothing wrong, therefore my mate should piss off as he wasn't getting anything.

The situation was partially resolved about a year later when the hubby got a paving slab accidentally lobbed through his car windscreen.

I agree with giving her the choice, especially as it's minor damage that sounds easy to sort out. She's only human and made a mistake - we all do, nobody's perfect; you may well do something similar to somebody else's vehicle one day. She was also decent enough to take responsibility, put her hands up and be honest about it, which in this day and age is quite rare.

Went with my initial instinct and repaid her honesty by giving her the price of a new fairing from David silver at a modest 75 quid, she met me after 1 phonecall and gave me the cash so can't fault her. And I get to repair the broken one for a spare, everyones happy

The fact that someone is uninsured isn't what pushes premiums up for everyone.

If someone is an uninsured driver or an insured driver is pretty irrelevant as the cost of the damage/injuries remains the same. Say you're knocked off your bike by an uninsured driver, how bad your injuries are has absolutely nothing to do with their lack of insurance.
