Now that winter`s over i`m eager to get back into the saddle but ive got a hankering for something different this time so flashy sportbikes are off the menu. Shocked Cant believe i said that but i did. Laughing

Ive been looking around for something new thats practical to run & use, but still with a bit of tart factor and enough power for quick overtakes and fun.

Ive come across 2 bikes i might be interested in because the prices from new are very appealing and i think they would suit the reliable-commuter-workhorse nature i`ll be using them for.
The new 2010 ER6-N (or F), and the aprilia pegaso strada.

Has anyone owned or own either of these bikes?

Winter won't be over for another month or two.

I owned a 2009 ER6F last year. It was fair bike, but I think I was rather impatient to get a new bike when something second hand would have been sufficient. Everything on it was pretty average, but it was a sporty, capable all rounder with a reasonably pokey engine. The biggest draw back was the bike's crude, non-adjustable suspension. In stereo typical Kawasaki fashion it gave quite a choppy ride, with the front end smashing over imperfections rather than soothing them out - even with softer Maxton fork springs and lighter oil added. Not that great for committing to a corner...

Which was a shame as the rest of the bike was okay, and the engine was more than up for a bit of a hoon. Not a bad bike on smoother roads though - quite comfy too, frugal, good weather protection, reasonable headlights, sounded good with an end can fitted (although this made the fueling snatchy around 3,500rpm (just where you wanted it to be smooth rumbling through town)). Performance in a straightline was on par with my NC30 - although the 650 had better roll on and cruising ability.

In hindsight, I should have spent half/a third of the money on an SV650 - very similar in terms of performance, but with, in my opinion, more road-biased suspension (and that's saying something).

Indeed - quite easy to get better suspension on an SV too, don't know about the kwak.

I suspect my recent new commuter cost a chunk less than the 2010 bikes you're listing will (edit, ok, cost a little more, but not TOO much more), yet I'd say is significantly more flexible in pretty much all ways - apart from lacking power, anyway, which can be a good attribute for back-road fun and not losing your licence.

are you talking about the gixxer thou G?
As much as i`m tempted to get another litre rocket ship, or sports 600, i fancy trying something else now after 3 years of silly speeds and i need something more economical (but nice) to get me around the country for work.
90% of my travel will be motorway cruising but i want a more relaxed riding position this time.
I didnt realise how much pain i had been in for the last 3 years until i stopped riding the sportsbikes. I must be getting old Wink

I can get the above 2 bikes for about 3500 brand new and as i`ll be keeping it long term i think its worth it this time over buying 2nd hand-nearly new.Reliability is high on my priority list and you cant get much more reliable than a relaible new bike Wink
Got my eye on a new cb5-6 with abs too but not checked the prices yet.

Yea, GSXR.

£3500 still seems a lot when it doesn't do anything really 'more' than a £1k-£2k bike. In my experience, new doesn't really mean more reliable, just means you have a load more hassle trying to get it sorted under warranty when it does go wrong Rolling Eyes.

You make a good point about the warranty thing but its a double edged sword really isnt it.If nothing goes wrong its a waste of money buying new, but if something does go wrong on a 2nd hand bike you`ll kick yourself later and wish you`d just paid a bit more for a new one. Rolling Eyes

as usual, youve thrown a spanner in the works and buggered my train of thought. Laughing
Need to go and look at all the older ones now and see if i can find any low mileage-well looked after examples. Rolling Eyes

Have you tried to claim for stuff under warranty?
After buying new and doing so, I'm wishing I bought second hand and just had the spare cash to sort it than have to even try and claim and be fobbed off etc (my excuse was the bike wasn't even out in the UK when I put the deposit down and the only example of the only rival bike I could find for sale second hand was written off a couple of days before I phone up.)

Saying that, plenty of people DO enjoy buying new and DON'T have any trouble (or they're gullible and THINK they don't, of course)! Anyway, it does 'work' for many, one way or another to be fair.

Saying that, the one good thing with buying new was the 'KTM Assit' recover, that were excellent when my clutch went in Spain - less excellent was the official dealer service, with test ride, just before I went (hadn't ridden it for some time myself) which didn't notice and in hindsight after fitting the new clutch it was bloody obvious it was on it's way out when I left if you regularly ride these bikes Rolling Eyes.

Incidentally the also questionable warranties dealers give away with their second hand bikes (often actually don't cover the legal minimum they have to) can be bought for private sales too. While these have limits on the cover, they tend to pay out a bit more easily and generally means a private sale wit one is still less than a similar dealer sale anyway.

Twice so far both on aprilias.
The first on the 125 was plain sailing and was done within a week and i got the bike back, but the 2nd on the rsvr was a nightmare. It went on and on for about 7 or 8 weeks whilst i waited for an ignition coil shipment.Theres a post about it on here somewhere about how the dealer finally took the the part of another bike he had in the showroom and put it on mine so i could get back on the road. All in all it was a disgraceful service that cost me about 800 in hire car charges to get to work... but i attribute it to aprilia customer service more than to all ALL warrantys from manufacturers.

Its a tricky decision indeed.I was all set to buy new yesterday but now i need to give it more thought after remembering the bullshit i went through with the aprilia warranty. Rolling Eyes Evil or Very Mad

Strange thing is though, ive just been looking at the later ER6 again on autotrader and most of the lower mileage/mint 2nd hand ones are the same price as a brand new one now.....so theres no real saving to made anywhere Confused
To get a big chunk off the price i`d have to go for the 05-06-07 models but they all look old and dated and dont have the tart factor of the 08-09-10s Rolling Eyes

Jesus, why cant buying a bike just be simple Razz

Those kind of warrantys are pointless really and just a sales gimmick.
Its 3 months parts and labour (but they dont mention its only on the major stuff they`ve checked properly and know wont cause any problems.)
Its not the same as a full manufacturer warranty (however annoying they may be )

I've known people that have made claims from those warranties ok - the garage is happy to do the work generally as they can put the claim in, while I strongly suspect official dealers have strong pressure put on them to reduce the number of warranty claims.

To be fair, with new prices a fair bit higher than they were a couple of years ago, £3500 for the kwak isn't bad, especially as they seem to be gaining a reasonable reputation.
I'd still just go for a £1k SV or TRX myself, though.

Check out the versys instead of the ER6. The suspension is adjustable and it has slightly more midrange instead of the top end poke. I found the ER6 too short in the leg (Im 5,11) where as the versys is better.

The versys wheelies better as well... Wink

I nearly bought the ER till I rode the versys....then knocked up 10k miles in 6 months on the versys.

Versys Thumbs Up definately a new contender.

Does that little cowl fairing offer any wind protection at motorway speed and upto about 90mph?
Any negatives about the bike?
What mpg does it return?
Has it got plenty of power for quick overtakes and can i use it for a bit of hooning?
Is there a fully faired or half faired opiton?

The wind protection isnt great, I bought the GT model and then modded the screen to add the original on top....I can now cruise at 90mph with the visor open if I like. I have added KTM hand guards so that keeps my hands clear and a rear hugger to stop the shit being thrown back on my legs in the wet. Im usually warmer out on the versys than I am on the 10r.

Over 9k miles of recording I have averaged 59.9mpg according to the fuelly website that Im on. Thats mostly cruising at 85ish on mways and a few full power to redline runs each tank. Usually get about 200 miles before the light starts flashing. Have pushed to 240 but there was only a litre or so left in there.

Lowest I have dropped to is about 50mph fully loaded with passenger and all luggage and was using the throttle alot.

Negative points:
Standard mirrors are crap, I have replace with ER6 jobbies.
Need a rear hugger added, also a fender extender on the front.
front brake is a bit vague, very wooden in feel, but Ive never had it not stop me or get me out of trouble.

It has plenty of midrange power just where you want it on the road, it will clutch up in second no probs even with a 1 tooth bigger front sprocket. Dont expect much power above 90, though its all relative as it still pulls, my friend had a cbr400 and on a flat out run there was nothing in it to an indicated 124mph. That was with both panniers on and my modded screen. Ive added an MTC can so its got a nice sound as well.

All in all a great bike that cheap to run. I bought it to replace my aging ZX7R to commute to work on (Hitchin-Luton-M1-M25-Kingston Upon Thames). It never let me down, its super comfy and is a bit different.

Ive been using the car this winter as I cant be arsed to keep getting all my gear on (plus the car is a new track day project in the making) but yesterday the roads were dry when I got in so the 10R got a blast out first as hasnt been out since November, then I took the versys out as that was last out over xmas and it was just so relaxing and comfy to ride.

Some of us don't need to make up for shortcomings in other areas Wink

Just remember, one of these:

is cheaper than one of these:

Why have you been looking at penis enlargers ?

Suppose its because your a bellend......but then again you might want to look for something to give you some bigger balls, so then you can manage to ride something with some real power... Wink

Don't you have several other larger and newer bikes as well as the rxs though 27cows?

Some would call this as much a form of overcompensation as wanting the shiney shiney Wink
