Very Sticky throttle grip

hi,
I have a honda vt 250 spada, its throttle grip (which is genuine) is sticking a lot and is really hard to accelerate, everything else is ok, just that right hand starts to hurt after some time.

Tried to lubricate it with some oil (i guess it was engine oil of some sort) it worked for couple o days and made it only slightly better not much tho. Now as the temperatures are really low, i guess that oil is the reason to very stiff n sticky throttle grip.

What would you recommend as a quick way to do it, and or what would be the best way to do it? WD40 may be??

Look where the throttle cable goes into the grip. there might be a boot or something you can pull back, to expose an adjuster that you can see some of the cable through the gap on.

Squirt some 3-in-1 down there. Job jobbed Thumbs Up

Take it off and grease it with lithium grease.

Copper grease is common, cheap and does what it says on the tub. Thumbs Up

Dont use that on your twist grip steve.
I suggest removing the twist grip and cleaning it with some carb/brake cleaner and applying a thin squirt of WD40 or GT 85 or the like on the handle bar, as for the cable itself, Silkopen is a good trick to use but often people use WD-40 and the like, i've never experienced any problems with either.

WD-40 is good as a short term fix but eventually it will dry out,lithium grease lasts longer.

WD-40 is purely for the tube the lithuim grease or normal grease will be fine for the cable seat of the tube, getting it on the cable is guite difficult if there is a rubber on them at the ends.

Lithium grease for the grip, aerosol based silicone grease down the cable. Thumbs Up Use one of these cable oilers:

WD-40 dries out under the tube too,that's why i stopped using it as lithium grease lasts ages under the tube and is a recommended lubricant for throttle tubes.

Just to note, underneath throttle tubes on "out the crate" bikes, there is nothing under them. Just plastic on metal.

I would have though putting grease between the throttle tube and bar would make the grip stick, as grease is "tacky". GT85 free'd up my sticky throttle Thumbs Up

Give the man a gold star - the best thing to put under the throttle tube is nothing at all. Clean both bar and tube spotlessly clean and free from grease or oil and re-assemble.

Another thing to note is that many sticking throttle tubes are down to the inside end of the rubber grip rubbing on the end of the handlebar, cured by moving the throttle asembly out a bit

Thanks Geri for the back up, its nice to see someone else in here knowing the ins and outs.
Another reason for sticky throttles can be incorrectly adjusted cables too and sticky butterfly valve assemblys but its uncommon.
