cleaning downpipes

I saw a post on here a few months ago were someone soaked there downpipes in vinegar to clean them.

I just wonder if this is good idea?
Will it clean all the crud of the pipes?
can I submerge downpipes in vinegar without damgeing them?

WD40 and a green pad works fine for me.

Finish off with Brasso for a satin look.

I have cleaned them but in parts they are black/brown
can I paint over them with silver heat proof spray?

I sprayed my exhaust on my ER5 and it came out really well and lasted ages. I took it off to spray it and used halfords exhaust paint.

forgive my lack of knowledge on cleaning materials but i hear a lot of people recommending scotch brite pads, am i right in thinking scotch brite is just the rough side of a washing up sponge?

I used a wirebrush on mine, and then some wet and dry to get a smoother shinier finish. They still don't look fantastic, but definitely far better than they did. If you spnt enough time and effort scrubbing them, you should be able to get a mirror finish. But screw that...

Are they stainless pipes ? I use 000 grade wire wool and autosol come up good as new! ( will remove slight corrosion )
