Since my Dad often makes trips from France to England, I take advantage of this buy making a little profit on buying and selling bikes.
I picked up a Gilera GSM off eBay. It was a spanish import with no papers that had never been registered in the UK. So obviously, nobody wanted it but me and I got it for £300.
In case you don't know, anything below 50cc that was manufactured before July 2004 does not need a numberplate or registration documents. So my plan is to sell it in France.
There are a few things I need to know from previous GSM owners. The bike seems to have been gutted as someone must have had the intention of using it as a field bike but nothing ever came of it. It has no battery, the electrics are a mess. None of the dash lights work. My plan is to keep things simple and simply get the neutral and full beam dash bulbs wired up. The front light and rear light both work and indicators are not obligatory on a 50 in France.
The speedo doesn't work, but the cable is not broken. I will investigate this tomorrow, but I screwed the cable into the drive in the front wheel, and rolled the bike forward, but the end of the cable did not turn. Then I screwed the cable into the speedometer and turned the other end, yet the needle did not budge. I will take apart the drive at the front wheel first.
The lubrication system has been removed but I don't intend to spend any money here and I'll just sell it as a premix bike.
Another thing is that the gear lever on mine seems to have very little feel. It may have been due to the work boots I was wearing when I test rode it.
1st and 2nd would select fine, but I had to rev it up past 8000rpm to get it to change in to second. And even then there was no telling click up from the gear change lever, I just had to go by the engine revs. Do all GSMs have such terrible gearboxes, or is it just mine?
One last thing, what gear oil does this take as I have no manual. I'm thinking just some 10W40 will do. |
