PostPosted: 23:42 - 23 Jan 2010    Post subject: my first paint job Reply with quote

ok so haveing never ever ever painted anything before in my life i decided to respray my bike and put some coustom graphics on it Smile.

So i started with the tail section, took some 230 grit sand paper and started rubing down and slowly worked my may up to a 700 grit.
then it was lovely and smooth then i layed out some rags (teatowels:P) out on the path and put the section on that.

Useing souble acrilic paint sprayed the first layer of primer and left for 2 hours t dry while i stencild out my chosen design to get it how i wanted it.

I then went to the shop to get some subaru blue paint wich they dident have so i thought fuck it ill just use the primer as a stencil base so i got home and finely sannded the first layer of primer down and aplyed another layer of it.

After another 3 hours of makeing a decent stencil it checked the primer and smoothed it off with 2000 grit wet and dry.
I then got some clear scotch tape and folded it over to make a weak double sided bond and stuck the stencil where i wanted it and continued to spray the red coulor coat onto it.

left for half an hour before sanding and top coating and it looked good. Then i thought the flame graphics needed more emphasis so back to the garageover the road for a volvo stilver touch up pen/brush thingy.

I proceded to outline the graphics and imedeately regreted it after driping silver paint on the red :O si i quicly reparded the damage and finished the outline.

then though damn it would look good with the blue i put that on the bike then saw the frame and realised how rusty and horible it looked so i sanded the bad patchees and sprayed them with the primer wich was ironicaly the same coulr as the frame although i may have it powdercoated black? any hu thats all for now ill updat you as i do the other panels

thanks liam

P.S have some photos and tell me what you think
im open to critisism

Is that Christmas tree thing supposed to be a flame?

I think you would have been better off doing it in one colour, then applying a sticker set and then lacquering over the whole lot.

yeh lol its suposed to be a flame (was a bit high on paint fumes when i cut it out) tbh im thinking of sanding itdoan and re doing it the paint got under the stencil Rolling Eyes ill draw up some new stencils the whole idea is that it stands out as there are a few bike around my area and although there nice bikes there quite bland im thinking maybe masking an outline only? also im thinking of changeing the wheel colour there chrome atm but its starting to flake ect. so owwould i go about striping them send them to a sandblasters? i realy like the idea of makeing it green so i may re chrome paint the rims and spray the spokes and centres pale green? also if any one fancies haveing a fool around with some design ideas feel free i realy dont know what to do with it

That looks terrible. The edges have bled, the stencil is poorly cut, and above all it's left just primer!

Plus it looks like a christmas tree.

You'd be better off painting it completely red, then getting some cut vinyl stickers and sticking them on top, then laquering over.

Hi Liam.
This thread = lol
lonie, please don't quit your day job.
The bike is best left one color, if you want to do fancy stuff then it's best done properly otherwise it will look shite.
Doing it well will cost allot of wonga and isn't worth it considering the bike.

ok i have taken your thoughts and decided to completely re-do it on thursday wen the garage say my pain will be here.

I cba with stencils so im just going to mask an outline.
If i cant get it right this time im going to put it all one colour (any one know the price to have the dvla change the v5 so i can have it a different colour?).

so same idea different design with grey primer blue underlay and red topcoat you probably tink its a bad idea to try again but no harm in tyring, and the bike isnt on the road yet so its not like im losing road time.

thanks for the ideas

Keep it all one colour, the flame you put on there at the moment is off centre and wonky.

If you really want a flame, cut out a stencil like this rather than making one up yourself. Thumbs Up

Is this a troll? I'm torn between jaw touching my keyboard and laughing in disbelief.

I'll entertain this just encase it isn't.

Firstly, that stencil is terrible. Fair enough it's a shit bike, but ham fistedly chucking paint at a wonky, christmas tree stencil, that looks like it's been made by a three year old isn't so much polishing a turd, more like stamping your boot into it from a 3 foot high drop kick.

Secondly, the chrome on your wheels should not flake. If it does, it is either very very poor chrome, or just a very poor paint job. Or chinese.

Now if you are serious about painting stencils on your bike, a trip to hobby craft or even homebase will give you some ideas, and materials to make a decent one. Have a look around google for ideas too, search 'motorcycle flames' or something.

I'm sorry, but that's horrific. It looks like the product of a primary school art lesson.

You're much better going for a single colour and doing your best to get the best/most professional finish. Lacquer on stickers if you want decals of some sort.
