Buying a bike with no V5 or keys......advice please

Evening everyone,
Wondering if anyone can shed a little light on this subject.

I'm thinking of buying a bike which is a bit of a 'do-er-upper'.

The advert says it's got no V5 or keys. Now I know how to apply for a new V5 slip as I did that with my CBR250RR.

I also know it's pretty simple to get a new set of keys. Just take the ignition barrel into the main dealer & they send it off, a week later & hey presto, you've got your new set of keys.

But my confusion begins here. What if the bike has no regestration plate? How can the DVLA issue a new V5 slip if there is no reg plate to give the details from Confused

Can the frame number be used as a reference point to obtain the original reg number? I'm only thinking this as I know the frame numbers are on the V5 slip.

If the frame and engine numbers are complete, then there SHOULD be enough to identify the bike. .. if it isn't then you will get a 'Q' plate ...

But surely you have to be asking yourself why the bike has no keys and V5 ...

Ask if the engine and frame numbers are complete ... if they are not, then its very likely nicked - if not by the seller, by a previous person ...

Thanks for the advice Blue. There are no V5 or keys as the guy on Ebay buys them from insurance companies. His feedback seems to be good, but I didn't want to get stuck with something that I couldn't sell on due to documentation errors

Surely you would want to check that the bike your buying isnt a seized bike?

We got hold of a scooter from an insurance company to do a mopedathon on. Was seized by the fuzz as the little scrote owner had no insurance. Was told that we would be prosecuted if we attempted to put it back on the road....

That made absolutely no sense to me evoboy. Are you saying that you were relying on the previous owner to still have valid insurance for the moped you now owned rather than insure it yourself?

Or were you just riding on the thing with no insurance?

He didn't use the moped on the road, he used it in a moped race on a track. What he was saying is the police told him if he tries to put it back on the road they will prosecute him.

Ah, thanks. That clarifies it Thumbs Up very strange that you wouldn't be allowed to legitimately put a vehicle back on the road though just because it's got a "history" with the law. I would have thought that once the vehicle is registered under your name it wouldn't matter what has happened before.

It's possible that there might still be an old tax disc on the bike with the reg no. on if it hasn't been surrendered.

Strange no one suggested a HPI check.

Get the dealer to provide the info needed to run one. Unless they are prepared to provide more info on the bike.

Yeah it is a gay set of legislation but I think there are some times when things can't go back on the road. Take mattspratts ninja, the first one, it was seized my police for some crime as well as having no insurance. The end result of that was the breakers putting an big angle grinder slah in the frame to ensure it never went back on the road- as they would be liable for prosecution if it did.
