hi all...

ive got a strange question regarding the range of transponder keys....

long story short my fz6 now has no keys as ive lost the only key.....the key sends a signal to ecu so the bike can start....

its gonna cost me a fair few quid to get a full lock set and ecu to sort the problem ...another option is getting a usa ecu as they dont have security keys.....but unsure if they are compatible.

but....i can pick the lock on the ignition key and am thinking if the lost key is in the house and bike is in garage attatched to house then will the signal still be sent.....

quite funny really as i can see myself getting the bike into the house and wheeling it round all the rooms trying to start it hoping the lost key will be in the vicinity of the bike.

i know its a long shot but hoping some expert on here can tell me more about how these transponder keys work and in paticular thier range.

Unfortunately the range on most bikes is just a few inches, on many the sensor is just around the ignition lock.

cheers chappis......heres to hoping...just wondered if the range was larger....

regarding the key......im screwed....you get 3 keys with the bike..1 red...2 black.....the red one has the codes....i only had one black one....which either wife or little one lost.....pffttt.

i think my best option is to try a yankee ecu to see if it a least starts.... then if it does then maybe a PCIII will sort the fueling.....

Similar thing happened to a friend of mine, however, he did not lose the key... He was pick-pocketed Shifty. He didn't realise until he got home (he had gone on the train to some nearby city, hence why he wasn't stranded with the bike) so had no idea where he lost it. Turns out his home and contents replace vehicle keys to the value of ?300 quid, or failing that will replace the locks up to a value of ?1200 with a 50quid excess. Now obviously he had to get a crime number and make a proper claim, which if he hadn't been pick-pocketed, would've been insurance fraud... But still, might be worth checking the small print to see if your contents insurance covers loss of keys rather than theft.

Should work no problem. Fuelling should be pretty similar provided it's not a Californian ECU.

Certainly works on the R6 anyway.

a ha .... good to hear... can i assume youve done this before with a usa ecu with an R6. whats the issue with the calafornian ecu???

finally ....apart from ebay do you know where i can get hold of a usa ecu.

Not myself no, my track bike's a complete American bike, however plenty of racers fit an American ECU to give keyless ignition. (You wire the ignition to the kill switch, but you can't do it with a European ECU because of the imob).

Californian bikes have stricter emission regs, so I expect the fuel map would be different from the rest of America, although if you're fitting an PCIII anyway it doesn't matter.

And try asking on a USA Fazer forum. Thumbs Up

I thought USA bikes didnt come with YIS? do you have a non usa spec bike? Check with yamaha first please, a lock set (with ecu) over here ranges from ?1000-?3000.

great....sounds likie its a goer then....cheers for that info....

....yea lonewolf it is a euro spec bike...cost for full lock set and ecu is ?950.....thats the reason for going for a yankee ecu.....no YISS so the ecu should go on my bike and not check for the secure key...............i get a key for my current lock for about ?20 and im back riding again... Wink ... hopefully

Doing that might cause problems with your insurance as your removing a safety feature. Plug in alarms will be useless too, you'll need a more exspensive alarm/imob.
search ebay for a ecu/lockset with THE RED KEY... You can get another key and program it with the red key, the bikes useless without it.
You can't just plug in the USA ecu, i'd need to change the wiring loom too.

is the fitting different then on euro v usa ecu's...they look the same...

Can anyone tell me 100% if an fz6 s2 ecu will run a s1 bike........(with correct locks etc)

i know there is a bhp difference ..... any help?
