Why the huge pointy out chin? Last time I crashed in one it almost broke my neck.

It lets better air flow which is nice under hard exertion.
I've also heard that when falling in deep mud/water it helps give you a bit of space to breath, or maybe just to try and spit out what ever you've swallowed!

Tend to advice against those that use them for general road riding on the whole breaking neck thing Smile.

Wikipdedia says:
Quote:

The motocross and off-road helmet has clearly elongated chin and visor portions, a chin bar, and partially open face to give the rider extra protection while wearing goggles. The visor is to keep the sun out of the eyes of the rider when he or she goes off jumps.

Originally, off-road helmets did not include a chin bar, with riders using helmets very similar to modern open face street helmets, and using a face mask to fend off dirt and debris from the nose and mouth. Modern off-road helmets include a (typically angular, rather than round) chin bar to provide some facial impact protection in addition to protection from flying dirt and debris. When properly combined with goggles, the result provides most of the same protective features of full face street helmets.

However, I'm not sure a standard full face wouldn't have the same properties.

They let a lot more air in through the front than full face, you sweat buckets in a full face even with the visor taken off.

I'm wearing mine on the road at the moment because I can't decide what full face to buy. I'm only mildly worried about the chinbar the main issues are there noisey and your vision is reduced.

The goggle frames restrict your field of view and the chinbar catches on my shoulder armour stopping lifesavers

Ah that's why my Arai tourX isn't comfortable on motorway. Wind comes in from chin.

Probably cos they're cheap.

Or cos sportsbike gangs in movies always wear mx lids cos they're a bit better for acting in (need to see those jaw clenches).

The Shoei version has a big chin curtain bit that stops this, but is a bit annoying as it can knock a breath guard down as you pull it down.
The peak is better than standard motocross peaks, but still pulls your helmet back a bit.

My parents did various 'adventure touring' with open face helmets 'back in the day'. However, think the only big issue they had was my dad's helmet splitting in half on impact, leaving him with a very nasty concussion and amnesia for some time.
