Erm... the YBR doesn't use pads on the back brake as it's a drum brake, so it has shoes. They last bloody ages, trust me. I just swapped mine over because they were getting old (23'000 miles/4 years on them) and had glazed over, although I probably could have roughened them up a bit with emery paper and reused them - still plenty of friction material left.
There's an easy way to tell how worn the shoes are - look at the drum itself, on the exhaust side, and there's a little pointer (2) that will move when you press the brake pedal. Push the pedal down with your hand and look at the pointer. As long as it isn't pointing to the wear limit indicator (1) (which is on the left) of the scale, you're fine.

...and yes it's all covered in the Haynes book, well worth getting. Sounds like that garage is trying to rip you off... ?311 for taking the back wheel off and changing brake shoes which you can buy for ?10-15 (and should last ages), which is an hour or so work... ____________________ CBT February 2008 | A2 June 2008 | Yamaha YBR125 (written off) | Honda CBF125 (current)

Hi
True if the drum is badly worn, but that isn't likely.
Most likely is as mentioned above. Shoes are cheap and won't take long to change.
Don't believe the pointer as there is little top stop the unscrupulous moving it round on the splines to either make it look like the shoes are fine when they aren't when selling a bike (or the other way round when wanting some work).
All the best

Hi
Suspect those shoes are fine for a fair bit longer.
If they are saying the drum of warped then it sounds like they are quoting you for a new wheel. You can get the refinished if lightly warped. However if this was the case you would feel the rear brake pulsing in use, and if braking lightly you would feel it judder.
Doubt the weight of the previous owner would make any difference at all.
All the best

I doubt the drum would be worn, mine isn't and I'm not exactly small. You can measure the internal diameter of the drum and check whether it's within limits. Both the Haynes and Yamaha service manuals say that a worn drum means replacing the entire rear wheel.
Maybe what they can hear is clicking or noises coming from a sticky cam? Or maybe a badly adjusted brake that rubs? Does the wheel turn freely with the brake off? I had a sticky cam on my bike and eventually it seized completely, keeping the back brake on all the time. Needed a clean and re-grease which sorted it. After 13'000 miles it won't hurt to open it all up, strip it down and clean/grease things. You can also measure how much stuff is left on the brake shoes, to see if they were lying. I still can't believe this job would cost over ?300, so I'd be suspicious!
The YBR's pointer can't be repositioned as the cam is notched so it will only line up/point one way. From the pic, it looks fine. However, I guess they could remove the tab on the pointer, or cut another notch into the cam or something, which you'd discover easily if you took it apart. ____________________ CBT February 2008 | A2 June 2008 | Yamaha YBR125 (written off) | Honda CBF125 (current) |

If they're telling you they need replaced just because they can hear something, then they've probably just not adjusted the brake properly after putting it all back together again..
Drum brakes are a walk in the park on those wee things - if you've ever serviced a handbrake on a car, it's about 50 times easier than that... ____________________ I must not be a troll...

?300+ sounds like a right rip off!
I had 2 new brake discs and an entire new set of pads and fitting for less than that! ____________________

Just had a look on eBay and a drum is £85 and the shoes are £14, I reckon an hours labour (2 max) + VAT = £200 ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen...

Wow. A drum brake scored beyond redemption in 13k miles.
Remind me to never buy a Yamaha with drum brakes. I'd be fairly grumpy about having to replace a set of shoes within that time framem never mind the whole wheel.
Although for an OEM wheel and pads, the price the franchised dealer is quoting you isn't excessive as he can only do you genuine yamaha spares bought through Yamaha UK.
I'd suggest you either a) Get the parts yourself or b) Go to a non franchised motorcycle mechanic who has been recommended to you by someone you trust.
That's because it is a rip off.
Not the dealer trying to rip you off, he's just passing on the prices he has to pay. The entirety of the "official" OEM spares market for both motorcycles and cars is a rip off and in my oppinion, should be circumvented at every possible oppertunity.
As far as I'm concerned, non-consumable spare parts for any vehicle should be sold at something like cost +10 to 15%. Anything more is profiteering from a monopoly. It is also profiteering from someone elses misfortune because they will only need these parts if they have a) Crashed or b) Worn out or c) Not been made very well in the first place.
You can tell it's a massive rip-off. If it wasn't. Breakers wouldn't be able to turn a profit from buying brand new motorcycles to dismantle and sell off as spare parts.
The consumables market looks after itself through market forces and competition from pattern parts manufacturers. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Just to give our perspective...
The brake drum being discussed here is badly scored and, in our opinion, beyond repair and therefore cannot be skimmed. We examined the drum when we fitted the tyres.
So...the price we quoted is for a new replacement genuine Yamaha wheel and brake shoes as well as the labour. |
Feel free to show us your breakdown for your parts and labour, i would be intrested, maybe yamaha can explain it as there parts are made in china ?, which makes them dirt cheap i would think.
When i had a problem with my forks with a second hand bike i bought from my Yamaha dealers in wigan they sorted me out, sure they could have palmed me of with blurb, but they didnt they helped sort it, made the customer happy, when i pass my test i will return for another bike.
