Google suggests some race bikes dont use a generator, saves on "drag" or something.

Im just wondering, I want to get this bike started just to make sure its mechanically sound, any way i can do this with no generator.
Bump start is no go as rear wheel is massively bent.

The usual way you start it, with a battery attached?

ok i might be talking about the wrong part then?

When i got it, i cranked the starter, the generator casing is gone and the generator and rotor were spinning.

With this taken off and the woodruff key stored away, it refuses to attempt to start.

Hi

The generator cover on the FZR600 holds the ignition pickup and think this is triggered by the rotor.

All the best

Keith

Hi

No go without the generator cover, pickup and rotor. Could probably get away without the generator windings themselves.

All the best

Keith

I checked the genny cover, it appears there is a connector looking thing that has wires going to it, im guessing thats the pickup??

Ive got that bit still attached to the bike, planning to make the cover out of acrylic...as the metal casings are around ?100+

Ordered a flywheel, generator to be ordered... but i will try and start without!

Hi

Would double check those prices. From the US they are $87 (part number 3HE-15415-01-00).

Or for about ?110 get some heavy duty NRC covers.

Given that the generator coils and ignition pickup run very close to the rotor you will need any cover you make the be very accuratly done.

All the best

Keith

I was thinking, if the pickup part of the generator cover gets bolted back on in 2 places out of the 5 mounting holes.. its pretty stable there, i just want the acrylic case to go over it..

so the pickup is mounted where its meant to be, with a protective acrylic layer over the top if you get me?

Hi

Might well work (although a fair chance the remains of the cover are bent), but does appear to be quite a bodge.

All the best

King of bodge Laughing
The cover with the pickup is actually in real good condition, upon inspection anyway!
Just its missing about 3/4 of the remaining cover!
Ive ordered a flywheel and im going to hook that up asap and give it a buzz, i'll order generator too.

The bits are available new still (and probably second hand if your that much of a greedy bastard). Just fix it properly rather than think outside the box fannying around with bits of acrylic that probably won't work anyway.

If you can find me a generator cover for my bike, then great.. ebay has none unless i want some hardened ones? I dont fancy paying the ?135 for hardened generator cover?
Id rather use the scrap plastic to cover and stop dirt getting in!

Thre is one from an FZR600R on there. Checked up and the part number is different but I would suspect it would still fit. And was something like ?15.

All the best

I take it that the bike is for the track not the road. It will give you a very limited range between charges and may well shorten battery life, worth it in competition but not for your commute.

It will be for road eventually, i just want to get it turning over and firing up at the moment.
Its going to be used mainly for a track day throw around this year, get me into track days, then if i drop it its only a few quid ive dropped.

Does the rotor run wet? As in, if you try to fill it with oil with that casing removed will you have an engine with no oil in very quickly?
The one on my CB250 seems to run wet, has the balancer chain directly behind it, but it also only has one side panel on each side.

If you have all of the bits and want to try a slightly better bodge, I have some aluminium MIG wire for my MIG welder here, and a full bottle of gas. It's the wire for use in high silica applications like castings. You can give it a go when you're able to drive, I'll even give you a guitar.
