Is it safe to buy a helmet online and have it delivered? - For fear of it being dropped/smashed about in transit.
I've got my eye on a Shark S800 and have found one online for ?152.99, which is cheap compared to my local motorcycle accessory shop (around the ?200 mark)
But... a few people have told me that they'd NEVER buy online for this reason.
Surely it would be fine - how do the 'shops' get their stock delivered?!!
I'd be grateful of opinions please Smile

Bought several online, never worried about it at all.

Helmets really need something inside them (your head!) for dropping to cause real damage.

It would be safe to say a helmet probably gets some fair knocking about in storage, handling, transport etc wether its bought from a shop or online so not something you should worry anymore about. Big savings to be made online, so as with most other gear I buy, I get the right size by trying on in a store then order online. Thumbs Up

edit: btw that seems expensive for a s800, I was looking at them a while back, quite a few on helmetcity.co.uk for ?99

The blokey in the shop told me that even if the helmet had been dropped on the floor from waist height, it would need replacing.... bloody salesmen!

Thanks for your input guys/girls - already swaying my decision!

Can't say much on buying helmets online as I've never done it but I personally found the Shark S800 to be a bit of a crap helmet. It's loud, has hard cushions (felt fine in the shop, but then anything after 20 minutes caused minor headaches) and the visor clips are useless. My visor flipped right off my helmet at 70mph on the motorway after about 8 months of ownership which is unacceptable quite frankly.

Shit, that's really bad. I wonder if anybody else has had simular problems? Just goes to prove that you never really know what you're buying - which is a worry.
I smashed the visor of my helmet, when I came off last summer - Got a cheap one to be going on with for now, but I do need to get a better one.
I'm not into pink, but would like a feminine style... maybe I should shop around and consider other brands.

if your worried about helmets being damaged in transit then they are just as likely to be damaged in transit on the way to the shop.

best advice i think is, try fitting in a shop then look for cheapest price, if thats online then buy it

i had an s800

the mouth vent broke and the visor became loose and kept closing

and i was on a 125 scooter Crying or Very sad

wouldnt have another one put it that way

and had a caberg lid that was crap as it was noisy

stick to box helmets now as they are (a) cheap (b) quiet and (c) good in the sharp tests

I've looked into this extensively and I can say that the only downside to buying a helmet online is that you can't inspect it for a Date Of Manufacture.
Especially in dealerships or in the warehouse helmets can sit for quite a lengthy period and it is recommended that helmet's should be replaced after 5 years, IIRC.

Of course if you are buying a newly released helmet or a certain rep/ scheme that you know was produced a certain year then this is irrelevant.
Other than that I'd have no qualms buying a helmet online, you can usually get lots of freebies if you hunt around IE helmet bags, care products, tinted visors..

I didn't read the last 5 replies so I missed this...
The internet is your friend here, see a product you like?
Google it, try a few consumer review websites or even amazon etc if they were likely to sell it,
Look out for forum topics on it and of course search BCF for past threads.
Try to read as much of the information as you can muster and then
you're armed with everything you need to make an informed decision. Thumbs Up
One more thing to keep in mind is that different brands will have different shell shapes so what suits my head may not suit yours.

Brands that I am fond of through familiarization, in order of favoritism:
Arai - I'd only personally recommend Arai as I've worn two helmets from their range,
The Condor which was and still is my first and a Quantum II (Now discontinued) that I had
from my dad when I spilled glue on the Condor and snapped off the side panel.
Eventually I swapped bits from the QII onto the Condor and it is practically good as new. (For fit).

The only problems I've had with the Condor is that one of the vent plastics fell off..
It's held on with adhesive tape Shocked but I just put it back on and it hasn't gone anywhere since.
Apart from that the visor takes ages to stiffen up after lubing the hinges,
Even if you din't lube it there will always be a point where the visor just snaps shut at a certain speed.

Shoei - My mate has a XR1100 and I used to wear an old relic when I was a kid,
The quality has always impressed me and I feel they are very sturdy in construction.
I haven't tried many of the newer range but of those I have I can't say they fit my head so well as some Arai's.

AGV - Had a lid kicking about for years that I'd just chuck at a mate if they were jumping on the back of my bike..
That's about all I can say about them really, if a particular model caught my eye then I would be tempted to at least give it a go.

wow... I've gone on, well HTH. Thumbs Up

i thought the 5 year rule was only when being worn, otherwis your saying if i keep a helmet in a dry, cool cupboard for 5 years itll be not wearable/safe, i think not.. Laughing

In practical terms I think you're probably correct tutton,
but in theory the shell construction of the helmet especially will degrade over time..
Which I guess has to be true but the question is will it be substantial degradation?

But then it begs the question how old is this second hand advice that I have heard? Technology is always coming along and Arai for example.. Embarassed
..seem to have some super duper 'new shell matrix' to yap on about every few years etc so maybe the helmet's of today could be good for 10 years plus?

But generally, nothing last's forever... That much I know,
I guess the important thing really is for the individual to go with what they trust and exercise common sense.
Obviously you'd replace a helmet if it was falling apart or you'd had a knock (you'd hope)
But other than that it'll always be up to you to decide when it's seen its service.

"is it safe?"

My dentist asked me this very question the other day whilst I was sat in his chair - scared the holy sh*t out of me until I realised he just wanted my opinion on investing in some shares we'd been chatting about earlier...

No, not at all... very helpful, thank you Very Happy Thumbs Up It's always good to hear how others rate certain brands. Like you said, arm yourself with everything you need to make an informed decision.
Also, a helmet must have for me... is that the visor opens/shuts easily, I need two hands on my handle bars(!) and hate all that faffing about with stiff visors.

I bought an HJC CS-R1 Fang helmet, off eBay, the other day, to have on my Bandit, because i've got a MX helmet which would, quite frankly, look stupid Laughing

This is it: https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HJC-CS-R1-FANG-MOTORBIKE-MOTORCYCLE-CRASH-HELMET-M_W0QQitemZ380155579362QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycle_Helmets?hash=item588309cbe2

I had to buy on budget, because most of my money has gone towards the bike itself, and my test/insurance etc...

I, for one, am extremely happy with the helmet, but most of all, the service from Ghostbikes. I got the helmet the next day via DPD, and it came in it's original HJC box, and that box was in another large cardboard box, so it was all protected.

I bought my MX helmet from Ghostbikes too, which i have been chuffed with.

Personally Kate, i'd go for it, if you no what size helmet you are, and you have your eye on the Shark S800, then just make sure you've checked the returns policy of the seller/company, in case it is a dodgy fit, and i'd say you're all sorted Thumbs Up

Get better savings online, all i seem to come across in shops these days are the expensive helmets that i can't afford, or the extremely cheap ones, such as V-Can, which are such terrible build quality, i'd be scared to ride wearing one.

Hope this helps Thumbs Up Karma Thumbs Up

Find out what fits you properly before buying online, that way the only situation that could arise where you'd need to return the lid is if they send you the wrong size.

Lots of places won't do returns on helmets.

You've got a point mate, but as far as i'm aware, Ghsotbikes, (who i got my helmet from) will offer refunds and will replace the helmet.

The HJC helmet i got, had a tiny bit of unstitched thread on the chin piece underneath, about 3mm, so nothing at all really, i'm guessing it was the manafacturers fault and not Ghostbikes who i bought it off, but i mentioned it to them, and they offered a swap, or a ?10 refund. They said they'd deliver the same helmet again, and when i collect it, i hand over the other helmet, which i think is really good Thumbs Up

Just a bit of loose thread, but ?10 in pocket! Naturally i went for the refund Wink
