Cisco VPN

any network admins / system administrators out there using cisco vpn clients ?

if so have you had many problems installing it and any tips ?

main problem is it hanging during the install of the deterministic network enhancer.

We use it all the time at work, never had any problems installing it.

what happens when try to install it do you get any error messages or anything?

its weird as some laptops its installed fine where as others its gets to the "installing deterministic network enhancer" then times out and asks if you want to wait or cancel

canceling the install generally causes a huge f*ck up and lots of blue screens.

this is happening on lenovo, dell and hp machines.

ive had to go into the registry to remove it as theres no add / remove option

i was just wondering if this was a common problem or if its more to do with the msi we are using.

Just a possibility - if any of the machines have other VPN clients installed, you will face problems installing Cisco.

We use Nortel VPN at work and therefore can't install Cisco clients (bit of a pain!)

i was sent an msi version 5 from our head office.
also managed to obtain another version 5 in an extractable file which ive had to use then just imported the connection.

sort off
it installed but then the connection wouldnt go through.
had a look at the cisco network connection it created and tcp/ip wasnt ticked !
ticked it and it connected finally.
beginning to think the poblem is with the msi rather than with the client itself.
next install i'll just use the normal client first and see if it works first time.

Just an FYI - If you have any Linux machines wanting to connect, use VPNC ( https://www.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/~massar/vpnc/ )- I use it to connect to my work VPN from my laptop at home running Ubuntu via it's front end on NetworkManager, which imports PCF files easily. There's also KVPNC - a KDE front end to it. I believe Cisco make a Linux client but from what I've read/tried, it sucks (that was a year or so ago so they may have improved it).

Been using it for a long long time, since ADSL first came out, must be going on 6 or 7 years.

I've had an issue in Vista, but never in XP. Must have had over 300 remote PCs using it.

Aside from being a Cisco partner is there an easy way to download a copy of the 64bit Cisco VPN client software so I can connect to a customer's servers?

I have an old 32bit version, but I'm now on Windows 7 64bit and in spite of asking both ends (our ICT/Customer Support and their ICT/Help desk) I'm not getting any sensible assistance.

How can it be this hard...?

Our work provides a Windows 7 64bit client if you want me to give it to you? I think you can just put your own profile settings in once you install rather than use their profiles (which won't work for you as you don't have a user account on their system anyway). Not 100% sure as I use Linux so don't have a need for the Windows client.

I have all the logins, connection settings, IP addresses via the *.pcf file, just no software.

I tired Shrew soft VPN earlier today, but got frustrated with it, and now I'm drinking again...
