I quite fancy owning a classic 1960s Vespa. I know many of you will think that this is very gay but they are a design classic ( Vespa is Italian for wasp, viewed from above they do look like a wasp) and a machine that changed society by giving cheap mobility to the young just after WW2. Then we look at the Mods, as much as I like 1960s British Iron and the cafe scene the mods had it right. Better clothes, better music (From Miles Davis to the Who) and better looking girls.
I have been looking at scooters on Ebay and came across this monster.

That kind of abomination is pretty common. You regularly see things like that at scooter runs.

I?m sure there?s logic to it, but I just can?t understand. If you want a chop, get a bike chop. If you want a scooter, buy a scooter but what the fuck is a scooter chop for!

I suppose they are CUTE!

If you get a hairdryer Mr Ariel, then we're finished ...yer hear me.
Mods spend too much time tarting themselves up and their scoots. Something that you don't do. Razz
The Mod scene in the 60s and 80s was rife with racism, contrary to your open beliefs.
The Who were plastic Mods.

There is a place for chopped scooters. The Hardley Rideable MSC have some pareticularly fine creations in their line-up.

That thing however is an abomination.

True that the scooter movement became overrun by the far right in the 70s and 80s but by then it was skinheads on scoots rather than mods. Mods were a product of the art-schools and red brick universities like the LSE in the late 50s, they were sharp dressers, skins were also a product of the universities but were just the opposite dress wise wearing the trappings of a bygone working class but the original skins were not a racialist movement. The music of the first skins was reggae not Oi ( it was not long before violence and racism took root as the skin culture moved to the football terraces).
No way am I wearing a Parker with a target on my back though.

That 2nd pic down in stinkwheels post. The one that shows the awesome-ness of scooter power. Note his body position. Feet back and upper body trying to keep the wheel down. His wrist is wringing that grip....yet the photographer has kept nearly everything in focus.

Sorry to be the one to break this to you but it's a scooter not a time machine, it will not transport you back to the 60's.

Much as I would consider myself a scooterist I don't really like chopper style scooters.

Looks like Reg's bike in your pics, which is powered by a modern 180cc piaggio 2 stroke engine

Lots of nicely done custom scooters on lammy inovations, with RD350/KTM/RG500 engines etc. Even a rotax powered Vespa on there. Its not cheap though.

Scooters are fun. Amongst my little bike collection I have a bog standard Vespa Rally 180 in bright orange.
Lovely little thing from 1970 and it still runs great.
The chopper thing is just wrong, very wrong. I can see why its called Sacrilege.
Here's my little Vespa

Really, lads. Do you know nothing of classic scooter construction? Smile

All the scooters here are lambrettas (although some have vespa engines...). You can tell because they have a spine construction based on a big metal tube*. Vespas are monocoques, if you cut them down you'll end up with hilarious unexpected results.

f.

*The "lambretta" in Dave's post is only about 1% Lambretta, that being the length of tube between the headstock and the front of the engine!

I really dont like scooters that much, I got one at the age of 17. I'd done a year at college and then went to work as a Junior IT Oik at an Internet company.

I rode it when we moved house and a couple of times round the block, never really got into it at all.

Saying that, I can ride pretty quick these days, one of the funniest moments I've had was me and a friend going out for a ride, we left Hastings heading out to Rye, on a 40MPH limit road we stuck to the limit to give ourselves a break before the corners. Me on my RR3 (that thing rocked, it stuck better than my RR7 and I should never have got rid) and my mate on his ZX6R. We both heard a buzzing noise and some kid on a 125cc scooter has overtook us.

Sat and thought, we'll do him on the corners, its not far now. This kid had balls, I stayed on his arse through the corners and most of the time mine was reading ~70-80mph.

Obviously he must have had a fair bit of engine work done but he could ride it well.

And to say Mr Rossi himself started fucking around on scooters, although they're pretty uncool, I can't see they deserve the ripping they get.

(Awaiting my karma to be gratuitously raped) - Please go easy, I occasionally dream of Gold Blobs at night.
