Basically been in this job for 9 months now since being intercalated from uni and have been on a BR WK1 tax code for 9 months. I think this is basic rate or emergency i'm not sure.
Now what i wanna know is, am i entitled to claim some of this Tax back?
And if so how do i go about doing it? I don't have a P45 from a job before this as i was on a student Bursary from April 2008 to june 2009. I do have the majority of my wage slips from this current job tho.

Phone up your local tax office, bolton may have been transfered to Manchester btw as they closed it down.

And tell them, they will most likely want evidence so send them your last payslip which should show the gross vs tax paid, you will be given a few forms to sign and the refund if you are due one will come in the next paycheque via no tax or reverse tax.

A quick and dirty way of working it out is this:

Annualise your salary (divide the 9 months gross by 9 * 12) then take off ?6,475.

Then whatever is left multiply by 32% (20% income tax + 11.8% NIC)

So a quick estimate on 14K = ?7525 *32% = 2408 tax + NIC

so 14000 - 2408 = 11592 net / 12 = ?966 month post tax.

I was in the same situation and noticed after 11 months of employment, I informed the tax office and they sent me a letter to say my code would be changed on the next payroll and I wasn't entitled to a refund...
I knew this wasn't right and phoned again to complain, They 'recalculated' and I got a rebate of over ?1000.

Just a heads up to keep at them if you know you're owed money. Thumbs Up

I know i had a mostly tax free year in 2008, but whilst in my part time employment there was times when i earnt over ?90 a week and therefore the basic rate tax code i had came into play.

I think every job i've had has had a BR WK1 tax code apart from one job.
