As long as you don't press too hard, or use a too big drill bit or have the drill speed too high/low then you should be fine whichever side you drill the thing from.

I've drilled the plates on my bike before, can't remeber which side I did it from I've never had any problems and I'm fairly sure I won't have done the all from the same side. Try it from one way and let us know how it goes. Even if it does make a small mark around the hole on the front of the plate the screwhead will be there to cover it up anyway.

And it's not that critical how neat and tidy the drilling on your plate it... or is it?

Ok, guys. Here is the perfect technique for drilling plates.......

drill from the back, using a 1mm pilot drill. Make sure your drill is set to its highest possible speed.

Change to a 6mm drill, still drilling at pretty high speed.

Drill from the front, just deep enough so that the full diameter of the bit has entered the plate.
Turn over and finish off drilling from the back.

Doing it that way means you don't lift the backing away from the perspex, and you will not chip either side of the plate when the drill breaks through.

Quick question for the people who say to drill from the front. How do you know where to drill?

The proper way to do it ( on a new bike is ).

Drill the holes through the bike where the number plate is going to go.

Posistion the plate on the bike and mark the rear of the plate through the holes with a marker pen.

Drill from the rear, straight through in one go without putting to much pressure on the drill.

Where can i get a custom plate made up, every where round here only sells the standard size plate which is way to big for my bike and is in the way of the new micro indicators.
