Hi guys,

never done one of these b4 - the starter clutch is kaput. It's only grabbing every 3rd or 4th push of the button.

Are there any special tools required ? Anyone know if it's a engine split or can do it thru the side case ?

Thanks in advance.
Si.

no idea about your particular bike, but find the starter motor and take off the nearest cover to it.

my SRAD had a dedicated cover for it, so you might have something similar.

Doubt that, but it is possible.
Yamaha like to have the starter on the inside pointing out to the left.
Just follow that starter to a case and remove that case and the starter gears will be there. It can be really daunting but if you just take your time and ease yourself into it take lots of notes and lots of pictures.
You should be able to do it with the engine in the frame.

I'd like to get some info on your bike do you have a owners manual full of info you could scan and message me? Odd request i know. Embarassed

on yamahas, the sprag is behind the flywheel,
take the side cover off, get a flywheel puller and remove the fly wheel, and the sprag will come out with it,
undo the 3 allen bolts that hold the sprag in place,

very rarely do the yamaha units fail, unless the idler gear is loose,
they sometime cause the sprag to crack,
when you put it all back togeather, put slightly longer allen nuts on the sprag and preen them (whack then with a punch to splay the end on the bold to stop them undo-ing themselves)
loc-tite the idler gear nut and fold over the lock, make sure every thing is up really tight,

yamahas have a tendency from the factory to have all the nuts just a little over finger tight, which causes the sprag and other bits early failure due to the movement,

its not a hard job, but take your time
good luck

Thanks for replies. Sounds like i'd have to buy some tools to get this too happen, and maybe a little more involved than i'd like. It's not my bike, was just a "love" job, so might advise to take to dealer as i've had "simple" jobs in the past turn into...nightmares and i cant be stuffed bying specific tools.
Thanks again for help.

its not a particuly hard job,
probably about an hour,
drain the oil, remove the gear lever, undo the side cover (try not to wreck the gasket if you can manage it)
that gives you access to the flywheel and idler gear,

you don't need (if i remember rightly) a special flywheel puller,
just the standard "harmonic balancer" puller
https://www.miracerros.com/mustang/pulley_stock_puller.jpg

you need to tighten up the puller with the 3 bolts, then do up the center bolt untill its really tight (not so tight as it strips the thread)
then whack the center bolt with a hammer, its the shock that will release the flywheel,

once you have the fly wheel off she's all smooth sailing from there,
dont lose the woodrift key Wink

I know the tool your referring too - it's like a tripod creature out of war of the worlds lol - the starter clutch itself is made up of rollers and springs that flick out when at speed, yes ? So it will be a failing roller or failing springs that are required to be replaced ?
Cheers again for help.

ducatis and most rotax based engines have that type, they are bad... but good, as you can easily shorten the spring and gain new life from your sprag
a fucked one looks like this

a good one/fixed looks like this

but saying that, i don't think your bike has that type of sprag,
i think it has the type with 3 springs, caps and rollers
