So: finally had extended use of my 'Generic Trigger SM' 50 this afternoon, and it's rekindled my excitement for biking.

Had a lot of issues with the bike and the dealer, it's s/h and there are loads of problems with it, so got a bit demoralised. But another story for another time.

I had it out over the weekend, but that was just getting used to it. This was more of a getting used to observations etc.

I pretty much shat myself when coming down a hill I had to change down at the bottom to go up again, thought the revs were low enough but I locked the back wheel up and it went everywhere.

I'm kind of getting the hang of shifting down, but any tips?

Indicators are flashing a bit fast, and brake lights don't work. The rear light comes on, but it doesn't get brighter when you press the rear or front brake.

Plus the speedo seems a bit touch and go, but I have a thread in Workshop for this.

Thanks!

Stick with it. Smile

for changing down slowly feed the clutch out. dont just drop the clutch out
that way if you are in a too low gear you can just pull the clutch in again and change up a gear.
You will soon just know what gear is needed

Indicators can prob be sorted by a flasher relay, about 20 quid from halfords / local bikeshop. Swops with current flasher relay (the thing that ticks when indicators are on)

Brake light could just be a bulb that has gone Smile

I was under the impression that when changing down you should make the revs high enough (before/as you start to let the clutch out) to match engine speed to road speed or something, rather than "low enough". If this was not a typo, maybe it is your problem?

And yes, as the previous poster said, don't dump the clutch Wink

Ahh thank you! I'll keep that in mind next time I'm out, tomorrow afternoon I guess. The garage replaced the entire rear light assembly, or at least they charged me for that, so I'm not too sure on the bulb. Anything else? Very Happy

Ahhh - I think this is where I've gone wrong. I've always just let the revs die and not touch the throttle as I change down. How do you gauge what the revs should be before you change down? I've no rev counter, so I just wait until I feel the power drop to shift down, or I can hear it screaming to shift it up.

Thanks!

In that case i'd be taking it back to the garage and asking them why it doesn't work despite their replacing it.

And it is harder without a rev counter (but fortunately a lot easier with experience). I understand your difficulty because when i started riding on a CG125 it didn't have a rev counter either.

TBH, i'd say just after pulling the clutch in give it a little bit (some) of throttle and hold the throttle position as you slowly let that clutch out. You can close the throttle again after you've finished changing gear. You'll soon get the feel for it and become better at it, or at least stop fishtailing the rear!

-- Long story --

Unfortunately I'm at wits end regarding the garage. I bought the bike off them at ?600 originally, rang me up next day saying needs 150quid of parts,(rear light, starter motor, air filter + cages), parts didn't arrive for two weeks, then after two weeks they rang saying they couldn't get it started. I decided not to buy it, they rang a couple of days later saying they'd fixed it, dropped price to ?400 and they'd throw in a service.

I thought F it why not for that price. Went and paid, tried to drive it back, wasn't confident moving out onto a 50mph bypass at peak time and it had no mirrors, and the oil indicator light was on. I mentioned this to them, he said it would have oil it'd been serviced

I left it to pick it up at a quieter time. Went to pick it up two days later, it had flooded. Paid the garage to clean everything, new spark plug, mirrors, etc. Ordered new clutch cable and all. Anyway, arranged that they'd drop it off. Took them like two-three weeks, 'snow' etc, got it eventually.

Family friend's son who's a motorbike mechanic came round to show me the basics, how to replace the cable and shizzle. Anyway, he checked the oil as I mentioned it and it was basically empty. Apparently the garage didn't service it, and yet told me they did.

Replaced clutch cable and adjusted rear brake myself. I'm proud of myself for that Wink. But you pay for what you get, so I'm not that bothered. Just not going back there.

I only found out when I got it working last weekend that speedo didn't work, and neither did the rear brake light still. They failed to mention both to me.

-- End long story --

tl;dr: garage is lame.

Going to go out tomorrow and try the suggestions, thanks Ingah! I get the impression it's mainly about clutch control, so I shall go out on a long jaunt and just practice. I guess I'll know if it works as it wont fishtail, haha.

I think naming and shaming is in order so i can add it to my mental list of businesses to avoid. If you don't feel comfortable naming them publically, i'd appreciate it even by PM.

I paid ?500 in December 2007 for an 02 plate Honda CG125 off a stranger (i.e. private sale) that was totally flawless (mechanically) over the year-and-a-bit i used it (8000/9000 miles in that time). So whilst i do understand the sentiment of paying less, getting less, i would say that ?400 is still ?400 and you have a right of goods to be of a satisfactory quality and to last a reasonable length of time (and to be "as described" to boot, including that service, which needs to have been done with "reasonable skill"). I assume you and the garage have already had arguments related to this - but i would like to assure you that what they've done sounds rather contrary to the sale of goods act and possibly the supply of goods and services act too (proving it can be a nightmare though - but if you are annoyed do consider reporting them to trading standards because we all hate cowboys).

Anyway, good luck with that clutch control.

I'd like to report them, but all this was back in December/Early January so I guess it's too late? Unfortunately as the bike is some obscure Austrian thing, parts seem to only be avaliable from them. Nothing on the 'net Sad.

Many thanks for your advice - seriously. I just kind of got fed up, wanted the bike and so didn't really argue or bring anything up with them. Was pretty peed about the lying re: service, paying for an engine rebuild wasn't on my to-do list TBH. But then I'm not sure if oil is on a service. I'll PM you the name Smile

Parts not available on the internet - only supplier is a garage?? Unless they hand make each bike themselves then i seriously doubt this. Get your ass back on google and try harder!! Mr. Green

Unfortunately the company had the smart idea to name themselves 'Generic', hip and all.

Searching for 'generic parts' is a pain haha.

I see what you mean. After 10 mins of searching not getting far Smile
Generic also make a scooter called Cracker.. Smile That is all i have found though

Can you not search backwards. Find an OEM part number on your bike then type that into Google and see who sells that bit
And work it that way?

You will find that once you get into the sites that sell the bits each one will just link to another and it will be relatively easy to get bits

It even looks like Tesco Direct sell them, so maybe ask them if they can get parts Link to tesco direct

If it is turning into a total nightmare it may be worth just cutting your losses, selling it and buying a different one.

Looks a nice looking bike though.

You tried Yellow pages? Lots of independant garages. Join up with your local area on this forum at the bottom and post in there who they take their bikes to. Chances are the problems you are having are simple to fix, it is just knowing how to do the fix. Smile

A really easy fix for the speedo is just to fit a different one. Smile
Even a pushbike speedo will do the job. Smile

Back light may just be a dodgy switch, or poor wiring. Any bike electrician will find the problem in no time at all using the tools they have

Stick at it. and dont let it put you off biking. Looking like you have just had a bad experience with a poor dealer and a dodgy bike with a few niggles.

Just keep tabs on what you are spending. It gets to the stage when it just isnt viable spending anymore on it

Good luck. Smile

Hmm, how would I find the OEM number on the bike? I've found one for the horn, but that works! As I found out when I tried to flash someone and hit the horn instead, haha.

Aye the engine seems to be absolutely fine. I've worked out what the problem is with the rear brake light, one of the cables is loose. If you connect it directly then hit the brake, the light becomes brighter. No idea how the garage missed that, and made me pay for a replacement rear light which didn't fix the problem. Urgh - but ordered some new connectors so I can fix that.

It's mostly teeny jobs I think.

Thanks for the luck Wink I'll need it. I'm pretty set on a 125 now Wink.

Thanks!

The horn will do
Just type the OEM code into a search engine

See where it links to
Chances are where it links to will sell more than just the horn. Smile
