Could a motorbike or moped of exactly 1HP keep up with a galloping horse and if not, why not?

I'd say not.

1hp equates to the work 1 horse can do in 1 day.

Thus a horse galloping will only be able to gallop for an hour or so before having a rest (for arguments sake) but could canter all day.

Thus a 1hp bike would be able to canter with the horse all day, but couldn't increase speed to match that of the gallop.

Alexio, are you trying to fill up the new server or something?

What i can add... a horse at full gallop is akin to riding a bike with knackered suspension, no brakes and very worn head bearings.
And it sometimes stops for a crap.

Power to weight ratio?
Even a moped weighs 120kg, + rider at over 90kg (i'm quite heavy Embarassed ) = 210kg.

Horse weighs = ?

Thing is, after riding a 6/8bhp moped (not sure which) for work, i'm not convinced i can outrun anything on it - so god knows how i'd fare with a 1bhp moped!

Random extra thought: Friction of tyres rolling over the road surface will be greater than that experienced by the fleeting contact of the horse's feet as it gallops.

Genuine curiosity.

And I really am just wondering. I think it's surely pretty even. I hear about epic horse races of days gone by where people would go hundreds of miles on horseback in short amounts of time. And of course, the horse has the off road advantage. What generally is the top speed of a horse and a 1HP bike?

well the 1.7hp insanity 749 is about 30mph..31 at a push.

A horse is.. well...
Quote:
Canter/Lope: 10-17 MPH.

Gallop: This depends on the horse's condition and athletic ability. Some horses are not built to run fast an may only do a fast canter at their best; however, the gallop is about 30 mph. Thoroughbreds, which are bred for running distance but not speed, have been clocked at over 40 MPH. Quarter horses, bred and raced for short distances at speed, can reach 50 MPH in short bursts according to the AQHA's website.

I was led to believe that horse power was based on lifting a weight or something, but I could (probably) be wrong

Most don't though. Most modern mopeds weigh around 80kgs.

My Raleigh had 1hp and 1mp. When you pedalled at the same time, it probably hit 30mph (no speedo though).

1 BHP isn't actually the maximum amount of power a horse can output. It's the average amount of work a horse can sustain indefinitely.

R. D. Stevenson and R. J. Wassersug published an article in Nature 364, 195-195 (15 July 1993) calculating the upper limit to an animal's power output. The peak power over a few seconds has been measured to be as high as 14.9 hp. However, for longer periods, an average horse produces less than one horsepower.

Things that move using legs normally have much better traction, acceleration and off road ability than things with wheels, but pay for this in a lack of top speed. So i expect a decent horse to make a 125 look stupid up to 30mph, but race horse top speed is about 45mph?

In that case why the hell have bikes got wheels!? we should get the latest mod's and fit them with legs instead. Idea

Other issue is that 1hp is the power a horse has spare (very very roughly) after it has already moved its weight. While the bikes 1hp would be its total, rather than the excess after moving its weight.

All the best

80kg dry weight? (in which case it's not relevant as you need things like oil and petrol tbh).
Or are you saying that a CG125 at 140kg wet-weight (always forget the correct word for that), is almost twice as heavy as the average modern moped Shocked

Petrol and oil will come to about 5kg in a moped Laughing And it depends what scooter you have, but it's rare you'll find a moped that weighs 120kg.

My Honda CG125 has approximately 8202.7 watts of power then and 1 horsepower = 745.699872 watts, if that helps you to contribute to the thread Wink

Legs would be possible but far too much effort. Whegs would work though.

Quiet you disbeliever. When the end comes food will be scarce and society will turn cannibalism, separating in to factions of varying resources. Once the petrol runs out we shall have to hunt down the unclean on horse back, like men once did.
