I wanna carry a spare tube with me when 'laning ...
I have a 17" tube, but the rear on my bike is 18" ....
Now clearly these things are made of rubber so will stretch a bit hence thinking it'll do
But has anyone actually tried doing this??? Did you have any problems?? ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity. |

I can probably dig out a tube that needs a repair/has been repaired if you want one, not sure the next time I'll be out. Need money to get the 690 officially serviced .
Have 18 and 21, but it's generally considered that 21 is the best choice.
Saying that, just rode 5 miles on the road with totally flat tyres, though I've got the tubliss system, so inner tubes aren't damaged more doing that. |

It may be 'considered opinion' just because it means you only need one tube for both wheels - fitting a 17" on a 21" might be rather more hassle .
However, I can see that a 17" on an 18" could maybe cause some heat issues if pumped up to any reasonable pressure as the rubber is going to be more stretched, whether that's worse than having doubled-up tube I don't know. |

Donkeys years ago when I had hair and a glimpse of a bra strap excited me it was reckoned that as an emergency 'get you home' measure a next size up (17" to 18"for instance) was acceptable. Going down from say 18" to 17" was not because there was a danger on inflation of getting a 'fold' in the tube risking an abrading action which could cause a rapid deflation. The other point is that in the event of an accident caused by an incorrect inner tube fitted and failing your insurance should they find out could well be invalid. Fit the right size tube !. |

FYI, after advice in this thread, I got a 21" tube (thanks for getting it for me Imonster ).
Anyhoo, I got a puncture in my 18" rear at the weekend ... so to test out the 21" in the 18" tyre gag ...
I always thought it would be ok to 'get you out of trouble' ... but I had only just started out and had ~90miles of laning left ...
Anyway, just to let you know, not only would it 'get you home' - it will also take the abuse of ~90 miles of laning without popping
Furthermore, I have now taken the tube out (wondering what mess would be left) and it is totally unaffected by the episode it would seem!!
So I can now convert the 'idea' into a tried and tested thumbs up for the 21"
Oh and I have repaired the original 18" with a motorcycle repair kit (see link below) ... it has repaired the puncture - no problem - but I'll report back to let you know how it gets on with the abuse of 'laning!!

I got a repair kit as not only did I not want to throw a perfectly good tube away, but I intend to keep it in my kit-bag and hope that I can actually use that to repair a puncture when out (then I don't have to switch 21" tube back out when I get home). ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity. |
