Just a heads up. These go for £80 in store, but they've got a few warranty returned items going cheap on ebay, all in useable condition. I considered nabbing one, but cant really spare the money right now, as it's something I don't really need atm.

Clicky 4 Available £30
That one says "no madrel", but you can buy those seperatly for £5.99

Clicky 5 Available £35
That's a complete item (refurbished).

Hope it's useful for someone, seems like a good bargain Smile

I have one of these and have done at least six chains with it now.

It works.

It's the type that mushrooms out a softlink with a slight hollow in the end of the pin rather than one that crimps the end of a solid pin. Feels like a solid piece of kit in the hand.

I paid £65 for mine from HG and consider it to have been a worthwhile investment.

I have a whale

One thing that is does lack compared to the HG one, is the 'squeeze new link together' function ... and that part of fitting a new chain is a real pain to do!! Sad

To the left of the picture you will see a Hein Gericke chain tool which splits a chain by means of two, 19mm spanners pushed really hard in opposite directions. To the right of the picture you will see a push bike chain tool which splits a chain by means of a small bar you twiddle with your fingers.

As you can see a bicycle chain tool is a great deal smaller. I garauntee either you will hurt your fingers or break your chain tool (or both) if you try to use a push bike chain tool on a motorbike chain.

Pushbike chains are also a simple interference fit, the pins just push into (and out of) the holes in the sideplates. The end of the pins on motorcycle chains are deformed after being pushed on so they don't come off again.

No it doesn't, you just need to learn how to use it correctly.

Turn the knurled wheel to push the plate of=n then sue a set of big grips to turn the knurled wheel when it gets too hard to turn by hand alone.

I have one of these HG tools too.

Does it also break the old chain? I thought it only riveted the new link in place. Embarassed

As it doesn't have the 'proper' assembly function as the HG one, that is exactly what I ended up/end up doing.

It does the trick eventually, but it is a bodge of a method and is a real pain/faff (hence my above response).

Basically it only puts pressure on one side/rivet of the link at a time (lots of swapping it from side to side and it getting all push on this a bit-pop off that at the start). It also marks the link badly where the end of the tool it is scraping/scratching a circle into your nice new plate as it rotates under pressure.

So it is a lot more of a faff to do (a bit better with 2 sets of hands) and it marks the link. From what I can tell the HG one is designed to do this and pushes the link on evenly over both rivets at the same time Thumbs Up

The other thing that is plops about the whale is that the knurling pin is free to rotate in the tool. This means that when you hit it, it will rotate slightly, so on your next hit, it is not in the same position.

When a link is 'properly' made it is knurled in 4 places - looks smart and is minimum 'stressing' of the rivet.

Sure, I have bodged my way round this too (put some mole grips on the end of the pin to hold/know orientation), but that isn't the point!! Thumbs Down

To be honest, the Whale is built like a battleship, but apart form that, I struggle to have anything positive to say about it, especially for the price!!! Thumbs Down Thumbs Down Thumbs Down
